Mauritius - Submission of Samples for Analysis (Agricultural Chemistry Division)


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Submission of Samples for Analysis (Agricultural Chemistry Division), the applicant should contact the Mauritius Agricultural Services. Contact link
  2. Applicant must visit the Mauritius of Government website and download the application form from this link- link or Applicants should obtain the necessary application form from the authority.
  3. After downloading the application form as a PDF document, the applicant must ensure that all the necessary details on the required forms, including a sample submission form, laboratory request form, and/or chain of custody form are filled out completely.
  4. The applicant must provide information on the type of soil sample and analysis needed, as well as the location and crop for which the sample is being taken.
  5. The forms will require details on the type of sample to be taken and the specific analysis that is needed.
  6. The applicant should Package the sample in a suitable container with appropriate labeling and include any necessary documents and which can be found under the” Required Documents” section of this page.
  7. Then the applicant needs to submit the completed application form with all the required documents to the MAS authority.
  8. Applicants must pay any fee associated with the request for samples analysis and fee details can be found under the “Fees” section of this page.
  9. Once the forms are submitted, the MAS will arrange for a technician to proceed with the necessary steps.
  10. The laboratory will analyze the sample that will be sent to them.
  11. Then the applicant will take the sample to a qualified soil technician or engineer to determine the type of sample and its suitability for the project.
  12. The technician or engineer will then provide a report on the samples and their suitability for the proposed project.
  13. The applicant will use this information to decide on whether to proceed with the project or not.
  14. If the applicant requires further assistance, they can contact the MAS offices for expert advice.
  15. The processing time for a sample analysis request is two to three weeks, depending on the complexity of the request.

  1. A completed Sample Submission Form.
  2. A valid Purchase Order from the client.
  3. Appropriate labels for sample bottles and packages.
  4. Original sample containers or sample bottles for the analysis.
  5. Properly filled in Chain of Custody Form.
  6. A copy of valid business license.
  7. A copy of the relevant product label or packaging.
  8. The sample itself.
  9. Relevant and complete laboratory analysis request.
  10. Proof of payment or a purchase order.
  11. Any additional documents may be requested by the laboratory.

Eligibility

  • Any Mauritian agricultural or aquaculture producer, importer, wholesaler, retailer, or other person involved in the production, handling, or distribution of agricultural or aquaculture products may submit samples for analysis at the Mauritius Analysis Agricultural Chemistry Division.

Instructions

  • All samples for analysis must be accompanied with a duly signed request for analysis. When the samples are submitted to the laboratory, the request for analysis should mention:
  • the nature of the sample, e.g., soil, plant, water, feeds etc.
  • the date of submission of the samples
  • the number of samples
  • the analysis to be carried out, i.e., the parameters to be determined (e.g., nitrogen or phosphorus in soil).
  • Samples should be properly labelled and submitted in sufficient quantities and appropriate containers (See Information for Customer above).
  • Samples will be received in the laboratory on working days during 09.00 – 12.00 hrs and 13.00 – 15.00 hrs.
  • Perishable items (e.g., fresh vegetables, fruits, leaves etc.) should not be sent on the afternoon of Fridays or on the eve of public holidays.
  • Samples that are not in good condition to be analysed, that is, rotten or perished, will not be accepted for analysis.

  • The samples submitted are analyzed for various parameters such as nutrient content, pesticide residues, and microbial contaminants.
  • This helps the government to monitor the quality of agricultural products from Mauritius and take necessary action to ensure that the quality of the produce is maintained.

  • The Agricultural Chemistry Division (ACD) was founded in 1940. It was then known as the Chemical Division of the Department of Agriculture of the Colony of Mauritius. In 1955, the Chemical Division was restyled as the Agricultural Chemistry Division.
  • The Agricultural Chemistry Division, located in Réduit, is a registered laboratory under the aegis of Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security.
  • The Agricultural Chemistry Division provides services for chemical analysis of agricultural materials including water, soil, plants (vegetable and fruits), fertilisers, feed and fodder, compost, farm manure, nuts, maize (corn), rice, honey, fish and fish products for various parameters including nutritional composition, major & minor nutrients, residues and contaminants.
