• A person seeking refugee status in Malawi shall make his application to the department of Refugees.
• On receipt of an application for refugee status, the Committee shall, consider the application and make such inquiry or investigation respecting the applicant
• The committee invites the applicant to give evidence
• As the Committee considers necessary and thereafter grant refugee status to the applicant
• The applicant is then notified the applicant of the decision by the committee.

The refugee Visa/ card is valid for five (5) years.

A refugee Visa/ID is an identification card given to all refugees in Malawi. It is a plastic identification card issued by the government of Malawi through the Refugee department under the ministry of internal affairs. The card provides important protection to the refugees when they are outside the camp.
