Indiana - Transfer/Exchange an OutOfState Commercial Driver License


Procedure

  1. Go to your local BMV Office.
  2. Bring along necessary document and surrender your previous drivers license.
  3. The BMV will conduct a driver record search using the Commercial Drivers License Information System (CDLIS) .
  4. When the BMV has received the required information, you will be contacted by the BMV to return to the license branch to complete the application process.
  5. Pay the necessary fees.





Required Documents

Proof of identity lawful status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency.

When you apply for a new drivers license, permit or identification card, you must present original versions or certified copies of the following documents:

  • One document proving your identity; and
  • One document proving your Social Security number; and
  • One document proving your lawful status in the United States; and
  • Two documents proving your Indiana residency.

The BMV offers services at different types of convenient locations. Full-service license branches are open Tuesday to Saturday and other customer service locations are open Monday to Saturday, except on state holidays.

Eligibility

To transfer or exchange your out-of-state commercial driver's license, you must meet all requirements to transfer a base license and pass the general knowledge written tests. If you have a hazardous materials endorsement on your current CDL you will be required to pass that knowledge test and have acceptable threat assessment approval to be issued the endorsement on an Indiana license.

Instructions

New Indiana residents applying for a driver's license, must surrender any valid driver's licenses that they hold from other states.

Applicants who do not hold a valid driver's license from another state, must hold an Indiana learner's permit for 180 days before they may obtain an Indiana driver's license. Note: You may not drive in Indiana with an out-of-state learner's permit.
