Certificate of celibacy (certificat de cĂ©libat): also known as a Certificate of No Impediment is not required by law. No administration can demand them however can be obtained from borough hall in France municipalities.

How to apply

  1. Present yourself at the in the Paris borough hall of your choice, with a copy of your birth certificate.
  2. There are no application forms to be filled, present your birth certificate to the municipal officer.
  3. The municipal officer finds that your birth certificate contains no mention of a valid marriage and therefore establishes the certificate of celibacy or the certificate of non-remarriage, depending on your situation.
  4. It indicates the receiving authority about the foreign authority which is at the origin of the request.

NOTE

French administrations, which need to check the situation of users, and particularly celibacy or non-remarriage, may request the production by the user of a certificate on honor. No form is to be requested from the administrative services. This certificate on honor must be written by the user, on free paper. For example, it can take the form of the following sentence:"
I, the undersigned, Miss ... declare that I am single Date Signature".

Foreign nationals can make the application through their consulate and may be required to fill application form for this procedure.

  • In order to inform a foreign authority of their celibacy (or non-remarriage), the Parisian citizens in possession of a French birth certificate can freely have a certificate of celibacy or non-remarriage drawn up at the town hall. Borough of their choice.
