Applicants must submit applications to Chinese embassies or consulates by themselves or someone else or through a trusted travel/visa agency. A personal appearance is necessary only when consular officials require an interview. Mail and mail-back services are not available at most embassies and consulates. However, for applications through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) wherever available (such as Canada, UK, Australia, France, Germany, India, Singapore), applying by post is an option and applicants can also complete the application form online. An online appointment is required for all applications in person.
Application in Your Own Country
Ideally, complete an application form (Form V.2013) truthfully and clearly on the computer and then print it out, since handwritten forms are no longer accepted. Provide as much information as possible on the form although some questions might not be relevant to your situation. One problem for many travelers is answering the question on where they will be staying. You should simply list some cities you might visit. For tourist L, many nationalities will not need to provide contact information, but if you have any then certainly enter them. If you are seeking dual or multiple entries, indicate the countries or SARs (HK, Macau) you plan to visit to show why you need multiple entries.
Application in a Third Country & Regions
Travelers often need to obtain visas while en route, in another country, for example, you are Austrians, you can also apply at Chinese Embassy in Berlin, Germany. While it is possible to obtain one in this situation it has become more difficult recently. Some offices do not accept applications from persons who are not resident in the country concerned. In some cases having a visa for that country is considered OK, but this might be of no help if you are in a country where you do not require one.

In the majority of cases, visa nationals (persons not citizens of China) are required to apply for a Chinese visa in their home country at the Chinese foreign mission (embassy or consulate) or through an appointed visa agent, prior to entry into China. In the U.S., this requires presentation of a physical passport to the embassy, where the visa sticker is affixed. This process requires four days but may be done in a single working day for an extra fee. It cannot be done by mail, and cash and personal checks are not accepted as payment.
