Procedure
Apply via Agent
- You must immediately report the loss or theft of your firearms document to either the Chief Firearms Officer of your province or territory or to your local police.
- To request a replacement certificate or licence, you will need to download and complete the Firearms Documents Replacement Request (link provided below).
- Send the completed form to:

- You may also submit the completed form to the Chief Firearms Officer of your province or territory.
- Pay the non-refundable licence fee.

- Firearms Licence - Possession Only: $25.00
- Firearms Licence - Possession and Acquisition: $25.00
- Firearms Licence - Minor: $10.00
- Firearms Licence (Business and Museum): $25.00
Validity
Firearms licences are generally valid for five years, and must be renewed before they expire.

Different classes of firearms:
- Non-restricted firearms are ordinary rifles and shotguns, other than those referred to below.
- Restricted firearms include:
- handguns that are not prohibited;
- semi-automatic, centre-fire rifles and shotguns with a barrel shorter than 470 mm;
- rifles and shotguns that can be fired when their overall length has been reduced by folding, telescoping or other means to less than 660 mm; and
- firearms restricted by Criminal Code Regulations.
- Prohibited firearms include:
- handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm or less and handguns that discharge .25 or .32 calibre ammunition, except for a few specific ones used in International Shooting Union competitions;
- rifles and shotguns that have been altered by sawing or other means so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm or their overall length is less than 660 mm;
- full automatics;
- converted automatics, namely full automatics that have been altered so that they fire only one projectile when the trigger is squeezed; and
- firearms prohibited by Criminal Code Regulations.
Other uses of the Document/Certificate
- A firearm licence authorizes its holder to possess and register a firearm and to obtain ammunition.
- The firearm licence must be kept current for as long as you possess firearms in Canada.
