- To apply for Vehicle Fitness certificate (FC) in West Bengal the applicant has to approach the RTO vehicle office where it is registered or is going to be registered is to be approached.

- Also make sure you have all the necessary documents to process the application
- The applicant should make sure they are eligible for applying for this procedure
- Make sure you have completed application form : Form 38
- Application forms can also be obtained from the appropriate RTO office.
- The applicant should bring in their vehicle for inspection.
- The vehicle will be inspected by Vehicle Inspector at the time of first registration and subsequent fitness for its road worthiness.
- Present the completed application forms in the counter and pay the appropriate fee where the officials would start processing your application.
- Inspection of vehicle for correctness as per norms will be carried out to issue FC

- To apply for vehicle fitness certificate (FC), the applicant has to visit the official portal of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways: Link to Portal
- In the homepage, please scroll down to “Informational Services” and click on the “more” button in the “Citizen Guide” tab.
- The applicant will be taken to the “Manual” page where all the available services will be listed.
- Please click on the name of the required service and click on “Step by Step procedure” from the drop down menu.
- The applicant will be taken to a new PDF page where the process for applying will be explained clearly.
- Please follow the steps to complete the application.

ValidityEdit
- In case of Private vehicles the fitness certificates is valid for 15 years and there after renewed at every 5 years
- In case of Commercial vehicles the fitness certificates is valid for 2 years in case of a new vehicle and subsequently it is renewed for one year.

- You have to maintain your vehicle fit and roadworthy through out the year. Having a valid certificate of fitness is not enough.
- The vehicle is physically inspected by Motor Vehicles Inspectors for their actual roadworthiness. The vehicles that comply with the following norms are considered to be fit for use on road. Some of the items under the provisions of CMVR, 1989 for testing are:
- Spark plug/Suppressor cap/high tension cables
- Head lamp beams
- Other lights
- Reflectors
- Bulbs
- Rear view mirror
- Safety glass
- Embossing of chassis E/G
- Horns
- Painting
- Body
- Silencer
- Finishing
- Road test
- Dash board equipment
- Pollution levels
- Braking system
- Speedometer
- Steering gear

Need for the DocumentEdit
- The registration of vehicle is treated as valid only if the vehicle has valid certificate of fitness. Fitness certificate for a vehicle in west bengal is required to renew the current status of the vehicle
- The fitness is checked and certified by the Registering Authority
- Fitness certificate is issued to check the pollution caused by the emission of smoke from the vehicles, to maintain the vehicle in proper condition and to avoid accidents
- Fitness Certificate is an official document certifying that the holder’s vehicle is fit to drive at public places

- An applicant should apply for renewal of his vehicle Fitness Certificate within 30 days from the date of expiry of its validity
- RTO officials has the right to decide upon the issue of certificate
