Uganda - Obtain a Motorcycle Drivers License

The procedure for obtaining a motorcycle drivers license is the same as applying for any other driving license and below is what one has to do in order to obtain one:-

  • Enroll for driving lessons in any registered driving school for Initial Basic Training (IBT) which is a mandatory training course that teaches basic riding skills to learner motorcyclists.
  • When an applicant completes the course, his / her instructor records details of training in ones logbook (which is usually given at the beginning of the course) and issue you with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion.
  • Obtain a Learners Driving Permit;In Uganda, before acquiring / applying for a Drivers License, one has to acquire a learners driving permit which has a validity period of three (3) months and it is always used as one obtains driving lessons. In order to get the learners license, one has to
    • Go to any URA Licensing office, get and fill application forms marked Form VII;
    • Fill a medical form marked Form UCDP1 in order to get a Medication Certification and this can be got from any registered medical practitioner;
    • Obtain a Bank Payment slip / form from any assessing officer at URA;
    • Make payment for the document;
    • After payment, attach it to the application forms and return them to the tax paper service desk at the licensing office (Make sure a copy of the bank payment slip is acknowledged);
    • The licensing officer then advises on when to go for your learners permit; and
    • When the date given by the licensing officer comes, go to Face Technologies for the permit.
  • Making Payment for test fees; When one completes his / her driving lessons; he /she makes payment for tests at any URA Licensing office;
  • Attach the payment slip on to the Learners Permit, go to any Police Inspectorate of Vehicles Driving Test Office and apply for a motorcycle test;
  • When one passes the test, a Certificate of Competence is sent to any URA branch by the Inspector of Vehicles (which he / she must communicate to you);
  • Apply for a full motorcycle drivers license at the URA Licensing office where the Certificate of Competence was sent (that was communicated to you by the Inspector of Vehicles). The application procedure for full motorcycle drivers license is as below:
    • Go to the designated URA Licensing office where your Certificate of Competence is sent the Drivers license application forms Form A and Form B Medical form;
    • Obtain Bank Payment Slips for a full motorcycle drivers license from the URA Licensing Officer
    • Make Payment to the appropriate bank
    • Attach payment slip and the learners permit on to the above filled form(s) and submit your application to the Tax Payer Service Desk at the URA Licensing office.
    • (Make sure that a copy of the bank payment slip is stamped to acknowledge receipt of application);
    • The licensing officer then advises on when to go for the permit; and
    • When the date given by the licensing officer comes, go to Face Technologies for to pay for and obtain the computerized permit.
    • On the first issuance, one must appear in person to have a photo, signature and fingerprints captured and after a period of about three (3) weeks amidst capturing the necessary information from the applicant, you must appear in person to sign for it and collect it.

To be eligible to apply for a motorcycle license in Uganda one must be eighteen (18) years an above.

ValidityEdit

The Learners / Provisional Permit is valid for three (3) months and Full Driving Permits are either valid for one (1) or three (3) years in Uganda, depending on the fees paid.

  • Before applying for the drivers license, one must prove he she is eighteen (18) and above;
  • Get the necessary Forms for any URA Licensing Office, Read carefully and fill in the required information.
  • Make all the necessary payments
  • Attach all the necessary documents required;
  • Return the application form to the URA Licensing Office; and
  • Appear in person to the National issuing office for the license.

Need for the DocumentEdit

A drivers license legal document one requires in order to drive a vehicle on the road. A motor cycle drivers license is that legal document that permits a person to ride a motorcycle on the road. Thus it is illegal to ride a motorcycle without this legal document. In Uganda for one to legally ride a motorcycle on road, you must hold a drivers license with Class A.

It is important to note that

  • In order for one to get this legal document successfully in Uganda, he / she has to visit two important places namely:- the URA Licensing Office and the Face Technologies (A South African company contracted by the Ministry of Works and Transport to design, print and supply computerized driving permits)
  • Prior to your driving test, one should study the Rules of the Road, practice riding as much as possible on all types of roads and in all types of traffic situations.
  • On the day of your test, one should give his / her plenty of time to arrive at the test centre with a few minutes to spare.
  • In most cases the Driver Tester begins by asking to see ones learner permit.
  • There are Common mistakes by motorcyclists during their riding test include Failure to perform a U-turn correctly, Inadequate control at slow speed, Inadequate observations to the rear and Incorrect or inadequate hand-signals

  • Completing your initial basic training course means an applicant will learn to become a safer road user, develop a strong understanding of basic motorcycle riding skills and be able to practice your riding unaccompanied on a public road.
  • Initial Basic Training (IBT) improves road safety.
  • Riding as much as possible on all types of roads and in all types of traffic situations will improve your technique and build confidence.
  • A driving License can be used as proof of identity;
  • The state uses its lengthy registration process to collect in-depth information on every person
