Uganda - Applying for marriage certificate

Procedure[edit]

In Person[edit]

  1. Parties may contract a marriage before a registrar, in the presence of two witnesses the registrar's office.
  2. The registrar then completes and the parties and witnesses then sign the certificate of the marriage in duplicate, and the registrar as in the case of a marriage by a minister, delivers one certificate to the parties and files the other in his or her office.
  3. The registrar of marriages in each district is required to register all marriages in a book to be kept for that purpose, and called "The Marriage Register Book".
  4. Within ten days after the last day of each month, every district registrar is required to send to the Registrar General a certified copy of all entries made during the preceding month in the Marriage Register Book and the Registrar General files the copy in his or her office.

  1. Original and copies of the Identity Cards or Passports of both parties.
  2. Complete Notice of Intention to Marry form
  3. In the event that either one or both parties are widowed, the Death Certificate of the departed spouse and a copy must be produced.
  4. In the event that either one or both parties are divorced, a Divorce Decree Absolute must be produced.
  5. Should the documents be in any language other than English, an official English translation must be attached.

Instructions[edit]

  1. Whenever any persons desire to marry, one of the parties to the intended marriage shall sign and give to the registrar of the district in which the marriage is intended to take place a notice in Form A in the First Schedule to this Act.
  2. After 21 days, the couple completes the affidavit of the Marriage Act, gets it commissioned by the Registrar and completes a Marriage Certificate Form.
  3. They pay a fee and then book a date for the marriage.
  4. The marriage must take place within three months from the date of giving the 21-day notice.
  5. Upon receipt of a marriage notice the registrar shall cause it to be entered in a book to be called the Marriage Notice Book which may be inspected during office hours without fee.
  6. The registrar shall also publish the notice by causing a copy of it to be affixed on the outer door of his or her office, and to be kept exposed there until he or she grants his or her certificate or until three months have elapsed.
  7. The registrar, at any time after the expiration of twenty-one days and before the expiration of three months from the date of the notice, upon payment of the prescribed fee, shall thereupon issue his or her certificate in
  8. If the marriage shall not take place within three months after the date of the notice, the notice and all proceedings consequent on it shall be void; and fresh notice must be given before the parties can lawfully marry.
  9. The Minister, upon proof being given to him or her by affidavit that there is no lawful impediment to the proposed marriage, and that the necessary consent, if any, to the marriage has been obtained, may, if he or she shall think fit, dispense with the giving of notice, and with the issue of the certificate of the registrar, and may grant his or her licence, which shall be

A marriage certifiacte is a document issued, either by a church or state authority, authorizing a couple to marry Immediately after the celebration of a marriage by a minister, the officiating minister is required by law to complete, in duplicate, a marriage certificate
