Uganda - Applying for Transfer of Vehicle ownership

Procedure

In Person

  1. The current owner has to log in to his created account on the URA website and go to the vehicle transfer page.
  2. He or She will be prompted to enter the details to whom the vehicle is to be transferred to for example the TIN number of the to be new owner.
  3. The to be new owner will have to log in to his URA account as well on site and accept the transfer of which the process will be sent to one of the URA staff to oversee.
  4. Upon successful verification of both the Transferer and the Transferee details probably in about 48 hours, the new owner will be issued a new Log book after handing over the old (current) log book of the vehicle.
  5. The process will end and the vehicle will now be in the names of the new owner.

Both new and old Vehicle owners



Fees

60,000 shillings for motor cars and other dual purpose vechicles excluding light goods.



Validity

Explain the time until which the certificate/document is valid.
e.g. Birth Certificate Valid Forever

Processing Time

The process of car registration is completed in less than 48 hours subject to all documents being in proper order.

Need for the Document

Once a car changes ownership both the new owner and old owners have to notify Uganda Revenue Authority about the transfer of ownership

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

The car log book can be used to borrow money.
Registration can enable one track the car in case of theft.
It is used for insurance purposes
