Apply In-Person
- Visit or call the ministry of works and transport office, and request for assistance on how to apply for a vehicle certificate of fitness
- You will be informed where you should go and book an appointment, the authorised person {CoF inspector} shall fix a date on which the motor vehicle shall be delivered for inspection.
- On the schedule date ,the applicant is supposed to bring the vehicle to the inspection site on which the vehicle will be inspected by the CoF inspector
- Upon completion of an inspection or a re-inspection of a motor vehicle, the authorised person shall issue a vehicle inspection report in respect of the inspection and shall give a copy to the owner in form 1.
- Where a motor vehicle fails the inspection or re-inspection, the authorised person shall issue a Refusal of Certificate of Fitness to the owner of the motor vehicle in form 2
- If your vehicle passes the CoF inspection, the inspector will apply the CoF sticker label on the inside of your front windscreen, on the driver’s side. The number on the Centre of the label shows the month your certificate expires. This is on the front of the label – the actual date your certificate expires is written on the back of the label
Note:
- If the applicant is unable to keep the appointment he/she should notify the authorized person at least 24 hours to the appointment
Appeal on refusal of Certificate of Fitness
- A person aggrieved by the refusal of the authorised person to grant a Certificate of Fitness may appeal to the Minister for a re-inspection.
- The appeal shall be lodged to the ministry of transport under the office of the Chief Licensing Officer within fourteen days from the date of the notification of the refusal.

- a copy of the operation licence in the case of a public service vehicle, a private omnibus or a goods vehicle
- a copy of the certificate of incorporation or registration in the case of a motor vehicle belonging to a company or other registered entity
- a letter of authorisation from the accounting officer, in case of a motor vehicle owned by the Government

- All person with a motor vehicle in Uganda
FeesEdit
- Licence fee is 30,000 ugx
- Renewal of the licences is 30,000 ugx
ValidityEdit
- Certificate of Fitness is valid for twelve months from the date of issue.
- Certificate of Fitness issued in respect of public service vehicles and goods vehicles of a gross vehicle tonnage above 3500kg shall be valid for six months from the date of issue.

- Approved testing station inspectors check the aspects set out by the Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Manual issued by the Minister of transport
- Tyre condition
- structural condition (rust is not allowed in certain areas)
- towing connection condition and certification
- load restraints such as load anchorages, log bolsters or curtain systems for condition and applicable certification
- certificate of loading (display and validity)
- transport service licence number (if required)
- lights (are all bulbs working? do
- Glazing (is your windscreen safe?)
- windscreen washers and wipers
- Doors (do they open and close safely?)
- safety belts (must not be faded or damaged, and buckles must work properly)

- A certificate of fitness (CoF) is a regular check to ensure that your vehicle meets required safety standards. Vehicles requiring this certification are:
- heavy vehicles – trucks, larger trailers, motor homes
- all passenger service vehicles – taxis, shuttles and buses
- rental vehicles, institutional vehicles
- It’s your job to keep your vehicle up to CoF condition at all times
