Apply In-Person:
- The license is issued by the following licensing authority, namely,
- The District Registrar, for their own Registration District and Sub-District.
- The Inspector-General of Registration in respect to the entire State.
- The Deputy Inspector-General of Registration in respect to the entire State.
- The application form for the Document Writer Licensing Test should be obtained from the District Registration Office. DRO Address and Contact Link
- The applicant should pass "The Deed Writers' Licensing Test" to get the legal document writer’s license.
- The notice for the Exam will be published in “Registration office Notice Board” and in any two daily newspapers of the district; one month prior to the exam.
- Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The filled application form should be submitted to the Inspector General of Registration along with the application fee.
- The complete fee details are mentioned below in the “Fees” section of this page.
- The prescribed fee should be remitted into the Treasury under the appropriate departmental head.
- The receipt challan should also be attached with the application.
- The registrar can accept or reject the application after checking the eligibility criteria and will intimate the candidate.
- If the applicant is eligible, then the document writers license will be approved and issued to the applicant by the respective licensing authority of the district.

EligibilityEdit
To obtain the document writer license,
- The individual should not be less than 25 years of age.
- The individual should be of good character.
- The individual should have passed a degree from a recognized university.
- The individual must know Typewriting; either Lower or Higher in both Tamil and English.
- Additional preference is given to individual having a diploma certificate in Computer Application.
- The individual must know the State’s official language. I.e., Tamil.
FeesEdit
The application fee for applying for the document writer’s license is;
- For one Registration sub-district – Rs.750.
- For one Registration district – Rs.1000.
- For all offices in the state – Rs.2000
Renewal Fee:
- For one Registration sub-district – Rs.300.
- For one Registration district – Rs.450.
- For all offices in the state – Rs.600

EXAMINATION – Document Writer Licensing Test
- The applicant should pass "The Deed Writers' Licensing Test" to get the legal document writer’s license.
- The exam is conducted by the Inspector General of Registration.
- The exam is conducted for 3 hours and there will be two papers that the candidate is tested on.
- Paper – I topics are:
- The Registration Act, 1908 and the Rules thereunder including the Table of Fees;
- The Indian Stamp Act, 1899 and the rules made thereunder
- The Transfer of Property Act, 1882 (Central Act IV of 1882)
- The Tamil Nadu Land Reforms (Fixation of Ceiling on Land) Act, 1961 (Tamil Nadu Act 58 of 1961)
- The Tamil Nadu Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulations) Act, 1978 (Tamil Nadu Act 24 of 1978)
- Paper- II topic is:
- Drafting of several kinds of documents
- The merit list of the eligible candidates is announced by the District Registrar based on the vacancy in different parts of the district.
- The qualified candidates from the merit list is granted with the Document Writer License.
- The document writer license can be obtained by passing the written exam conducted by the Inspector General of Registration.
- As the notification for the exam is published once in two years, the candidates should carefully follow the exam update from the government.
