Apply In-Person

  • To apply for a Driver license in Tamil Nadu the applicant has to approach the RTO office to which your area belongs to. Following link can provide you information related to the list of RTO office : RTO Office List
  • The applicant should make sure they are eligible for applying for the license by reading through the eligibility criteria that has been listed out under the “Eligibility” section of this page.
  • A person who has obtained Learner’s Licence may apply for Driving Licence after 30 days and before six months from the date of issue of Learner’s Licence.
  • Application forms can be downloaded from the following link : Application Forms
  • Please make sure you have all the documents that are listed down the “Required Document” section of this page.
  • Application forms can also be obtained from the appropriate RTO offices that should be completed and presented with appropriate fees.
  • Present the completed application forms in one of the counter and pay the appropriate fee where the officials would start processing your application.

Apply online(Through Parivahan Portal) - Tamil Nadu Obtain Driver License online with Images

  1. To Obtain Driver License (Car, Bike, Motorcycle), the applicant can make the application online via the following link link
  2. The applicant has to click “Drivers/ Learners License” and select the respective state from the drop-down menu.
  3. On the next tab, the applicant has to click “apply for Driving License DL” and read the instructions and click “Continue”
  4. Next the applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  5. Make sure that the applicant has to upload all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. Review the application and click “Submit”
  7. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  8. An acknowledgment receipt will be displayed. Please save it for future reference, it contains the application summary and contact details of the person to be contacted.
  9. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number.


Printing application:

  1. You can take printout of online application form with the help of the link: Application Link
  2. Select “Tamil Nadu” in the drop down menu against “Please select the State from where the service is to be taken”
  3. In the next window, please click “Download Forms” to select “Print application form” option
  4. Please enter your application number and other detail in the next window and hit ”Submit” to follow the next window to get the printout.

Appointment:

  1. You can book appointment with RTO using the following link online appointment link
  2. Select the state and click the “Appointment (Slot Booking)” to select “Driving skill Test” option. In the new window select appropriate option and hit submit to process your request to book appointment.

EligibilityEdit

  • The minimum age to apply for a permanent licence to drive a private motor vehicle is 18 years.
  • You should have a valid learners licence.
  • You should apply after 30 days and within 180 days from the date of issuance of learners licence.
  • A person who is at least 20 years old and possesses a Learners License can obtain a Licence for driving a commercial vehicle. Also, one has to be conversant with the traffic rules and regulations in all the cases.

ValidityEdit

A Driving License for a private vehicle is valid up to a period of 20 yrs or an age of 50 yrs whichever is earlier, and 5 years thereafter. But, a commercial Driving License is valid up to three years.

To get a driving license, he/she should know the traffic rules first. Driving license are categorized by vehicle, it is classified into driving license for without gear bike, with and without gear bike, with and without gear bike plus LMVT to drive car, License plus Batch to drive a travels cars, autos, License for Heavy motor vehicle to drive lorry, truck, License HMVT plus batch to drive the heavy load transport vehicle. To get a license first you need to take LLR from the RTO office.

Driving Test Rules for bike

For all bike, to pass in driving test, he/she drive a bike in path designed as no. 8 in between the 20 meter distance, for turning he/she should put a indicator as well as show a hand signal and to stop the bike we raise our hand above the head. This should be done without our legs touching the ground.

Driving Licence Test Rules for car

Car test is not a difficult test it is a easy test. In car testing, for turning he/she should use indication and to stop the car he/she should show the hand signal used in the bike test, after he/she put the brake in smooth.

Important points for car driving test:

  • Shift the gears smoothly, dont switch off the engine until you stop the car, use side mirror and rear mirror to drive.
  • At the bike driving test RTO stands near the testing area to see how the driver drive the bike
  • At the car driving test RTO sits with you and check how you shift the gears, how you release the clutch.

The above points is only noted by RTO officer, if you follow these two points you get license after 1 week. The test should conduct weekly one day. If you failed you should reappear in the test in another day.

Here are some important details which have mentioned the procedure for getting appointment for driving licence

First you need to fill the details like name, fathers name and residential address. After this you need to select RTO jurisdiction district and RTO office. You have to mention transport type. And you have to specify that it is a learner's licence or driving licence. Also you need to fill the vehicle records. In this you need to enter transaction type and sub transaction type. Attach all the important documents which is required. And after that click the submit button.

You will get your driving licence within 30 days from the current date of appointment.

The above procedure has been changed to the following:

The applicant has to check with RTO to know about Driving Test venue. He/she can go to Driving Test Venue at 8:30 AM with vehicle and other below-mentioned documents without any prior appointment with RTO. Driving Tests are conducted by RTO every day. Once the applicant is through with test, he/she will be asked to go to RTO by 11 AM to take photo to be printed in License. Once the applicant presents himself/herself for photo at 11 AM at RTO, he/she can again go to RTO by 4 PM to collect his/her Permanent Driving License by producing Applicant's copy of receipt of the fees paid.
