Procedure

1. To register a food establishment, applicants will need to submit an application to the municipality where the business is based. In some cases applications are sent to the National Food Agency Sweden or the county administrative board. The National Food Agency Sweden, county administrative board and municipality share responsibility for supervision. The National Food Agency Sweden inspects larger establishments, such as slaughterhouses/abattoirs and large dairies, while the county administrative board inspects primary production, such as the rearing of slaughter animals and the cultivation of vegetables and berries. The municipality inspects other businesses, such as restaurants and shops. Note: You will need to get in touch with your municipality, if you are uncertain about what applies to your business.
2. You will need to choose one of these forms "Registrering av livsmedelsanlggning" or "Godknnande av livsmedelsanlggning" (Registration of food establishment" or "Approval of food establishment"), depending on what applies to your business.
3. You will also need to attach to your application a business description with range offered, handling and scale of the operation.

Applying for a permit:

After you have set up a food business, the establishment in which the business is conducted must be either registered or approved.

Food establishments are usually registered with the regulatory authority, which is usually the environment and health protection committee in the municipality where the business is based. In some cases, the establishment must be registered with or approved by the National Food Agency Sweden or the county administrative board.

Businesses in which food is sold or delivered directly to the end consumer, such as shops, catering firms, employee cafeterias, cafs and restaurants, must be registered. This also applies to businesses that are only intermediaries and redistribute food without impacting the food's packaging, labeling, safety or composition.

In some cases, the establishment must be approved before operations can begin. This applies if you intend to establish a butchery, dairy or a delicatessen/butcher's shop.

Requirements:

• A food establishment operator is subject to requirements concerning among other things the training of staff, personal hygiene, that the water used in the business is clean and free from bacteria and chemicals, and that vermin do no enter the premises.
• The establishment and the equipment are also subject to requirements that they are maintained and kept clean and that food items are inspected upon arrival and stored appropriately.
