In order to have social security in Spain, you must pay a contribution every month. The payment will be made by the company in which you are working and it entitles you to retirement and unemployment benefits, sick pay, maternity leave pay and free healthcare. The amount of retirement or unemployment benefits you receive will depend on the amount you contribute during your time in Spain.
Once you have a job in Spain, your employer is required to register you in the social security system and deduct any contributions payable by you from your wages. However, you will have to apply for the number yourself.
In order to obtain a Social Security number, you must go to the nearest Social Security office with your NIE and ID card or passport. There are several offices around the city.

Your employer applies for this number when you start your first job in Spain. This number then stays with you for all subsequent jobs. If you are self-employed, you apply for this number yourself.
Every person who works for a registered company in Spain is required to have a Social Security Number, called a nmero de afiliacin de la Seguridad Social. Social Security is generally paid for by an employer. This number also helps track pensions, unemployment and sick days, as well as maternity or paternity leave.

- Employer's Contribution Account Code.
- Social Security Regime.

- AT and EP (acronym in Spanish for Work-Related Injury -W.R.I.- and Occupational Disease -O.D.-) (only for registration before 31-12-2006) heading

- Professional activity.

Need for the Document
The Social Security Number identifies citizens in their relations with the Social Security system.
The Spanish social security number is what you need to allow you to start working in Spain. The social security system is Spains system of social protection. Under the Spanish constitution of 1978, article 41 determines that the public authorities shall maintain a public social security system for all its citizens that will guarantee enough support and social benefits in times of need, more specifically in the event of unemployment, and moreover that this support will be free of charge.

The Social Security Number becomes an Affiliation Number at the time when a labour activity determining inclusion within the Social Security System begins.
Characteristics of Affiliation:
- It is compulsory for all persons included within the System for purposes of rights and obligations.
- It is a single one, general for all the Schemes within the system.
- It covers the entire life of the person included in the System.
- It is exclusive.
Other uses of the Document/Certificate
The Spanish Social Security system benefits all workers who are active within it. Each calendar day cotizado, that a worker has been employed, counts towards your Spanish pension and unemployment benefits, so be sure to check that your place of work has given you the activation, called an alta.
You will also need it for obtaining the healthcare card, which will give you access to Social medicine in Spain through the CatSalut organization. This means that a percentage of your income taxes go towards a medical plan that gives you access to doctors and specialists in Barcelona, and you will be able to find a clinic in your neighborhood, where you will be assigned a specific doctor.
It must be applied for prior to the registration and affiliation application or the application for any benefits or service at the Administrative Office of the General Treasury of the Social Security where the citizen's home address is located or where the company at which the worker renders services is domiciled.
