Apply In-Person:

  1. To Obtain Pregnancy Termination Service, the applicant must either go to the Government hospitals or designated private doctors, or gynaecologists, or non-profit service providers in South Africa. Hospital list link and Hospital list link and Safe Abortion Services List
  2. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  3. First, the applicant/patient must make a request at the primary healthcare clinic regarding the abortion decision.
  4. The patient/applicant must sign the “Consent Form” at the clinic/hospital to follow the pregnancy termination service.
  5. Later, the patient will be confirmed for the termination service, and then will be given the counselling if the women is under 13 weeks pregnant.
  6. If the women are between 13 weeks and 20 weeks pregnant, then necessary health check-ups will be made, and if it safe, only then the pregnancy will be terminated under specific conditions by the expert health worker.
  7. There are no charges for the pregnancy termination services in the primary health care centres.
  8. However, in the private hospitals, there will be a minimum charge for the service.
  9. The pregnancy termination process duration will be intimated to the patient while confirming the services.

EligibilityEdit

  • Women of all ages have the right to terminate the pregnancy irrespective of their ages.
  • However, it is advisable for the minors under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a trusted adult (parent/aunt/teacher) for support.



FeesEdit

  • There is no fee in the primary healthcare facilities to take pregnancy termination services.
  • Ambulance services are also free for the women who have an abortion.
  • However, in the private hospitals/clinics, there will be a minimum charge to take the pregnancy test services.

  • There is no validity period for the pregnancy termination services.

  • Any women who wish to take the pregnancy termination service can approach the health care centres with a referral letter.

  • The pregnancy termination service is carried after 20th week pregnancy after the consultation with a registered midwife only if the continued pregnancy,
    • would endanger the woman’s life.
    • Would result in a severe malformation of the foetus.
    • Would pose a risk of injury to the foetus.
