South Africa - How To Convert your Foreign Driving Licence

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for converting your foreign license, the person who needs to do so should visit the nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC) in your province where you obtained your permanent residence.
  2. The nearest DLTC can be visited with the help of the contact links available in “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please find the link according to your Municipality under the appropriate province.
  3. Get the application form (DL1) which will be available at the DLTC. Please click on the following link if you want to download: Link
  4. Please make sure that you have all the documents with you that are mentioned in the “Required documents” section of this page, when you visit the DLTC.
  5. Fill all the required details. Mark with an ‘X’ which corresponds to “Replacement of foreign driving license” field in the “List of possible transactions” segment of the form above the part A.
  6. Also mention the category under which you need license in the part B of the application form. After completing, read the Declaration part carefully and attest the form with place and date.
  7. Then, obtain and complete the notification of change of address or particulars of person or organisation (NCP) form for converting your foreign driving license.
  8. Submit both the forms and required documents at the concerned department in the DLTC. After all the verification and validation processes got over, you will be issued your Replacement with prior intimation.

  • ID or Temporary ID or SA passport or foreign passport with PRP
  • Four numbers of black and white photographs of ID size
  • Residential address proof (Utility bill)
  • Affidavit confirming the applicant’s residence (in case of lack of utility account)
  • Confirmation letter from ward councillor (in case of informal settlements)
  • Valid Foreign driving license
  • Proof of Permanent residence in RSA
  • Proof for non-residence in SA at the time of Foreign license reception
  • Sworn translation of license in any SA official language (for license in other language)
  • Confirmation for the validity of license by a driving license authority
  • Corresponding Driving License card (For International Driving Permits)

EligibilityEdit

  • Any foreigner, who has obtained the SA permanent residence, can apply for converting his/her Foreign driving license to a South African one.
  • He/she must apply for such conversion within 5 years after receiving the PRP.
  • Any foreigner can also apply for converting his/her driving license if he/she has a diplomatic permit instead of PRP.

  • With the help of the contact details, you will get to know the nearest testing centre for license.
  • The centre can be contacted for exact fees details for application of license test and also issuing fees of license cards.
  • Please confirm with the DLTC that how many photos they require before you have photos taken.
  • If your licence is not in one of the official languages of South Africa, you must get a letter of translation of the licence by a competent authority.
