Procedure

• Visitors can drive for 1 week (7 days from arrival) on approved licenses from few nations.
• Visit the Traffic Department at Madinat to check the validity of your nation of origin permit.
• If you want to drive for longer than a week you can apply for a Temporary License which is valid for three months.
• It is possible to extend the license when it expires.

Apply in Person

1. If you are traveling to Qatar for a short-term stay, you can drive in the country with your national driving license for a period of up to 7 days. Your national driving license must be recognized by the Qatari authorities; the list of eligible nationalities is available on the Ministry of Interior of Qatar website.
2. After 7 days in Qatar, you need to apply for a temporary driving license. A temporary driving license is required if you do not permanently reside in the country.
3. To apply for a temporary driver license an applicant has to submit an application in person to the General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior (MOI). Contact information of the General Directorate of Traffic can be found in the "Contact Information" section of this page.
4. In order to apply for a temporary driving license, go to the Madinat Khalifa Traffic Department. Here you will be given an Application for a Temporary Driver license form to fill and submit.
5. Fill in the required information correctly and attach the required documents. The required documents are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
6. Proceed to pay the appropriate application fees for the temporary driving license and attach the acknowledgment receipt to the application form for submission.
7. Traffic officials will go through your application to verify that everything is in order. If everything is in order your application for the temporary driving license will be processed.
8. The applicant will be notified once the temporary Driving license is ready for collection. This normally is after a period of three to five days.
9. Carry your identification documents when collecting your new temporary driving license.

• A sight test will be performed. Note that in most cases, driving tests are not required

Need for the Document

• The temporary driving license is issued as an authority to allow Tourists and visitors to drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road in Qatar.
• No Tourists or visitors are allowed to drive a motor vehicle on road in Qatar unless he is the holder of a valid temporary driving license endorsed in respect of that class of vehicle.
• The driving license shows compliance with Qatar’s traffic laws regarding driving.

• Avoid driving in the far left lane when you first start driving here. This is considered the fast lane and it is common to see drivers ignore the speed limits set on the roads.
• The fines can be considerable for speeding (500 QR) and driving through red lights (6000 QR).
