Eligibility[edit]

Category AM: Applies to all types of mopeds (maximum speed 45 km/h), i.e. two-wheeled, three-wheeled and four-wheeled mopeds. Check the vehicle registration certificate to see if the vehicle is classified as a moped. Category AM is limited to three sub-categories (AM 145, AM 146 and AM 147)

The minimum age for driving a three- or four-wheeled moped with an unladen weight not exceeding 150 kg (minus the weight of the batteries, if electrically powered) is 16 years. If the mopeds unladen weight exceeds 150 kg (minus the weight of the batteries, if electrically powered), the driver must have reached the age of 18. The same age limitations apply when you acquire a category AM 147 driving licence after first having acquired a category T driving licence.

By moped car is meant a four-wheeled moped with a body, steering wheel, pedals and controls corresponding to those in a passenger car. As a result of all this equipment, the unladen weight of these vehicles always exceeds 150 kg, and the driver must therefore be at least 18. No exceptions are made for persons who only hold a category AM 147 driving licence. However, a 16-year-old can drive a moped car if he/she holds a driving licence for light motorcycles (category A1).

Fees[edit]

  • Theoretical Test: 580 NOK
  • Issuance of driver licence: 270 NOK
  • Photo : 70 NOK

Validity[edit]

Driving licence categories A, A1, B, B1, BE, M, S and T normally have lifelong validity, given as being up to the age of 100. In special cases the validity may be limited to a shorter period (criminal record, poor health, no test of night driving). However, after the age of 70 the validity of the driving licence is dependent on your carrying a valid medical certificate when driving.

A medical certificate has a validity of from one to five years, depending on the licence holder's state of health.

Instructions[edit]

  • Category AM 145 (two-wheeled moped): Applies to driving a two-wheeled moped on the basis of having achieved the minimum age without completing compulsory training.
  • Category AM 146 (two-wheeled moped): Applies to two-wheeled mopeds. Applicants must pass a theoretical riding test after having documented that they have completed compulsory moped training. The applicants criminal record and health will be checked before a driving licence is issued. The health requirements are the same as for passenger cars.
Category AM 146 replaces the moped driving licence that was previously issued upon completion of compulsory training, but without the learner having to take a practical riding test. As long as the moped driving licence still documents the driving entitlement, it is not necessary to replace it with a category AM 146 driving licence for driving in Norway.
  • Category AM 147 (three- and four-wheeled moped): Applies to three or four-wheeled mopeds, including so-called moped cars. Before the driver reaches the age of 18, the driving entitlement is limited to three- and four-wheeled mopeds with an unladen weight not exceeding 150 kg (minus the weight of the batteries, if electrically powered).
