Procedure[edit]

Re-registration[edit]

In order to re-register a birth, the child's parents must complete the appropriate application form:

Form GRO 12 - If both the mother and the father want the fathers name to be recorded on the birth entry

There is a Registrars Office in each of the 26 District Council Offices. The birth can be re-registered only if both parents go to the Register Office together, or if one parent goes alone and produces either:

  • a Statutory Declaration of Parentage made by the other parent; or
  • a Court Order naming the Childs Father made under:
    • Article 7 of the Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995;
    • Paragraph 2 of Schedule 1 to the Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995;
    • Section 5A of the Guardianship of Infants Act 1886;
    • The Illegitimate Children (Affiliation Orders) Act (Northern Ireland) 1924; or
  • a Parental Responsibility Agreement made by both parents under Article 7 of the Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995.

Form GRO 12A - If there has been a court issued Declaration of Parentage, complete form GRO 12A and send it to the General Register Office with the Declaration to allow the re-registration of the birth.

Form GRO 15 - Where a child has been born to an unmarried couple who have since married. Re-registration may be carried out at any Registrars Office in Northern Ireland.

Return the completed form to:

The Registrar General
Oxford House,
49-55 Chichester Street,
BELFAST BT1 4HL

Corrections[edit]

In some cases, an error may appear on a birth certificate, for example an incorrect address or wrong date.

A correction may be made by means of a marginal note to show the correct details. You should complete an amendment form to notify GRO of the correction required.
