Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for registering change of ownership of a vessel in person, the applicant (new owner) has to visit office of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and make a formal application in a prescribed format.

  3. Visit the office and obtain a declaration ofownership form for change of ownership of a vessel from the respective department.
  4. Before that, the applicant will have to present the proof of consent to sell the vessel obtained before the sale from the Director General and Registrar of Ships,in front of officials.
  5. Also, obtain an application form for registration of the vessel from the respective department.
  6. Make sure that you have all the required documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  7. Complete the application form and declaration form as required with necessary information and attest with your signature.
  8. Then, attach the documents required with the completed forms and proceed to submit it to the Director General at the Office for further verification and application processing.
  9. The application package will be forwarded to the Registrar of Ships/vessel for its verification. The Registrar will allocate a person in charge for the application process who will assess all the attached documents.
  10. The person will also check for the eligibility of the applicant to be registered as an owner of the ship.
  11. In the meantime, the applicant will be called for paying the required fees for the application process at the office as directed by the officials.
  12. After successful payment and proper verification, the person in charge presents his/her recommendation to the Registrar of Ships.
  13. The Registrar in turn, intimates this to the Director General and waits for his/her approval.
  14. If approved, the applicant/new owner will be issued with a certificate of flag registry by the Director General. In case if not, the applicant will be provided with a formal notification of rejection which will contain the actual reason for the decision.
  15. In this case, the applicant can contact the Nigerian Ship Registration Office and seek assistance for any clarification or solution for obtaining the approval.

EligibilityEdit

  • Any Nigerian citizen, who wishes to obtain the ownership of an already owned vessel get transferred to him/her, can apply.
  • The applying corporate body must have been established in Nigeria under the Nigerian laws.
  • A consent for the sale of the vessel must have obtained from the Director General and Registrar of Ships.
  • A purchase invoice or Bill of sale is a prerequisite for the application process.
  • An authorised representative is also eligible to carry on the applying process.

  • In cases of transfer due to death or bankruptcy, the transferee or any authorized representative must complete a declaration statement in a manner instructed by the office of Minister.
  • In case of bankruptcy, the transferee must produce a proof issued by the court for the title of persons claimed.
