Need for the DocumentEdit
Birth registration is the process by which a childs birth is recorded in the civil register by the applicable government authority. It provides the first legal recognition of the child and is generally required for the child to obtain a birth certificate.
Birth registration is a key event in a childs life. This is because of its importance in providing legal proof of the identity of the child. Unregistered children find it difficult to access their human rights. These include the right to a name and nationality, the right to be free from all forms of exploitation, the right to protection in the juvenile justice system, the right to education and the right to health care
Information which might helpEdit
Birth registration is the official recording of the birth of a child by a government office. It is a permanent record of the existence of a person before the law and it is customary to issue a birth certificate as proof. If the certificate is subsequently lost or damaged, it is usually possible to obtain another copy from the relevant government office. In some countries, the child is immediately registered by staff in the hospital or birthing centre where the child is born, or a parent travels at a later date to a government office to register the birth.
When unregistered children grow up they may also be denied the enjoyment of collective privileges that are open to them as equal members of society. These consist of economic privileges, like the opportunity to work, to open a bank account, to obtain credit and to inherit; social privileges including marriage, welfare benefits, social security and a pension; and political privileges such as the right to vote and otherwise participate in civil and political affairs.
Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
The importance of birth registration also goes beyond the individual child. It is a critical element of civil registration systems which provide information on vital events including live birth, death and foetal death.
Birth registration data, when correctly collected, can therefore play an important role in the planning of a countrys economic and social development.

OthersEdit
If you cant register the birth in the area where the baby was born, you can go to another register office and they will send your details to the correct office. If the parents cant register the birth (e.g. for medical reasons), certain other people can do it:
- someone who was present at the birth
- someone who is responsible for the child
- a member of the administrative staff at the hospital where the child was born
