Step 1: Obtain a Police Report

  • You should start by visiting a police station to report the loss or damage of Kenya Enrolled Midwife (KEM) Private Practice License. You are to acquire a police report from the police authorities which is a prerequisite to making the application.
  • Attach this police report with your application.


Step 2: Apply Online

  1. A licensed Kenya Enrolled Midwife (KEM) Private Practitioner can replace their lost or Kenya Enrolled Midwife (KEM) Private Practice License online by visiting the Nursing Councils of Kenya Online Services Portal through the following link: NCK Online Service Portal
  2. Log into theNCK 'Online Service Portal using your "Username or Email address" and your password.
  3. Upon entering your accounts' homepage, click on the “Replacement” tab in the menu on the left pane to enter the next page.
  4. On the Replacement page, click on the “Make Replacement Application” button to enter the next page where you are required to provide information for your application.
  5. Please provide required information for licensing. These include:-
    • Email
    • Mobile
    • Practice type (Enrolled)
    • Area of practice (Select Midwifery)
    • Work Station Type (Select Health Facility or Others)
    • Work Station /Facility
    • Work station details (National Government of Kenya , County Government, Private Sector(Health institutions), Other Ministries , Mission , Private , Municipality , Institutional , Unknown, Non-governmental organization, Faith based organization, independent Practice, Others)
    • Select county
    • Workstation /Facility
    • Please attach the police report obtained
    • Attach copy of damaged/lost license if available.
  6. Confirm that all the information you have given is correct and click on the “Apply for Replacement” button.
    • This will cause an invoice for payment of the replacement application fees to be generated.
  7. On the Invoice page click on the “Click to Pay Now” button to pay for the Kenya Enrolled Midwife (KEM) Private Practice License
    • Proceed to make the payment using the instructions given online. The Payment instructions will be generated and displayed automatically in the portal. More information about the licensing fee to be paid is given in the "Fee" section of this page
  8. Upon making the application payment, a payment receipt and the Replaced Kenya Enrolled Midwife (KEM) Private Practice License will be generated online.
    • Note: Wait for approximately 10 minutes then refresh the invoice page. After refreshing the page, you should find copies of the receipt and Private Practice License ready to be printed.
  9. Click on the “Download Receipt” button and the “Download License” button to download the payment receipt and Replaced Kenya Enrolled Midwife (KEM) Private Practice License respectively.
    • Print the receipt and license and keep them for reference.

  • A Kenyan Enrolled Midwife private practitioner needs a Private practice license in order to practice midwifery privately in Kenya.
  • It is an offence to practice midwifery privately in Kenya without a valid license issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Note:

  • No person shall engage in private practice as a nurse unless such person-
  1. Is a citizen of Kenya
  2. Is registered, enrolled or licensed as a nurse under the nurses Act chapter 257
  3. Has served as a nurse for a period of not less than three years under supervision of a senior nurse of not less than seven years standing
  4. Is a holder of a private practitioner registration certificate from the NCK
  5. Is a holder of an annual license known as a private practicing certificate for that year
  6. Is a holder of such other qualification as may be prescribed by the Nurses Act chapter 257.


  • Notwithstanding, a person who is not a citizen of Kenya may be licensed to practice as a nurse if he satisfies the Council that-
  1. He is of good character
  2. He has paid the prescribed fees
  3. He has undergone a course of training and passed an examination, elsewhere than in Kenya, which would not qualify him to be registered or enrolled under the Nurses Act Chapter but which the Council recognizes as sufficient to enable him to practice nursing in Kenya.
