Procedure

The Nursing Council of Kenya determines applicants eligibility to write the exam by evaluating their conduct, academic and practical progress at the training school. Candidates are allowed a maximum of 4 resits and must satisfy the Board of Examiners for each of the papers before they are eligible to apply for enrollment/registration.

The application must be completed in full and be presented to the Registrar, Nursing Council of Kenya through your institution of training.

All applications must be accompanied with a copy of your National Identity Card [ID]/passport. Applicants for re-entry to examination must also attach the previous NCK Examination Result Slip.

The entry/re-entry to examination fee is Ksh 5000 for Basic Programmes and Ksh 7000 for Post-Basic Specialization Programmes. All payments to the Council should be made through the following bank accounts:

Please note that if names provided are different from the Legal Names in the National Identification Card [ID]/Passport, documentary evidence of legal change of name/affidavit must also be attached to this form.

To take the Nursing Council of Kenya Licensing Exam, using the Entry/Re-Entry to Licensing Examination Form, you will need to register with an approved regional examination center.

There are over 20 centers around the country and all of them are inspected by the Council to ensure that they meet our standards.

All examinations, wherever they are held, take place on the same dates and at the same times in line with the published timetables.

Instructions

The licensing examination is administered through regional examination centers. It consists of 4 individual papers for basic cadres and 3 papers for other cadres. Each paper examines specific competencies expected of nurses practicing within that capacity and is administered over the course of three hours. Papers comprise multiple-choice questions, short answer questions and long answer questions where the candidate is expected to respond to brief health-care scenarios.

Need for the Document

The Nursing Council of Kenya is responsible for ensuring that all nurses within its jurisdiction meet an acceptable level of competence before they begin to practice. This level of competence is measured partly by their licensing exam.

Information which might help

The Nursing Council of Kenya is the accreditation authority responsible for accrediting education providers and programs of study for the nursing profession. As at July 2015, the Council has approved 101 nurse training institutions to train students at degree, basic and higher diploma level for various branches of nursing practice.

It is imperative that students make sure that the institution where they will be trained as a nurse is approved by the Council AND that the training programme (course) is also accredited by the Council. If either is NOT ACCREDITED, the Nursing Council will not recognize any of the training the student has received. This means that the learner will not be able to practice in Kenya (or elsewhere) after completing the training. The education and training regulations (available on this website) give minimum entry requirements for each nursing education and training programme.

The Nursing Council handles complaints or reports received about illegal institutions and/or illegal programmes operating in Kenya. Under the Nurses Act, 2011 it is a criminal offence for someone to operate such an institution or to offer such a programme. If you are aware of any institution that you think may be operating illegally or providing an illegal programme, please send full details to the Council for investigation.

Results

Examination results are announced through the Examination Portal, normally on the day of the next Full Council Meeting. Once results are released, candidates will be notified through SMS. At the same time, result slips are sent to training institutions for collection.

Successful Candidates

Congratulations to all successful candidates. Use the Application for Registration Form to apply for registration and licensing within 30 days from the release of your exam results.

Unsuccessful Candidates

Candidates who are not successful may resit the examination during the next cycle.

The licensing examination is assessed using two methods:

Average: Candidates musts score an average of at least 49.5 to pass the examination. Candidates awarded an overall fail grade must resit all papers.

Minimum: Candidates must score at least 49.5 on each paper in order to pass the examination. Overall grade is awarded based on the minimum score attained. Candidates awarded an overall fail grade resit only the papers failed.

The grading scale is explained briefly as follows:

Distinction [74.5-100]: An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. The candidate demonstrates excellent judgement and a high degree of independent thinking.

Credit [64.5-74.4]: A very good performance. The candidate demonstrates sound judgement and a very good degree of independent thinking.

Pass [49.5-64.4]: A good performance in most areas. The candidate demonstrates a reasonable degree of judgement and independent thinking in the most important areas.

Fail [0-49.5]: A performance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria. The candidate demonstrates a limited degree of judgement and independent thinking.

The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) is a statutory body established by the Nurses Act Cap 257 of the Laws of Kenya to ensure the delivery of safe and effective nursing and midwifery care, to the public, through quality education and best practices. It is the only professional regulatory body for all cadres of nursing and midwives in Kenya.
