All students, parents, headteachers and Sub County Education Officers are hereby requested to adhere to the deadlines prescribed by the Council for the registration of candidates for the KCPE examinations.

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) is a certificate awarded to students after completing the approved eight-year course in primary education in Kenya. The examination is supervised by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), an examining body in Kenya under the Ministry of Education. The exam time runs from the second week of November and takes four days.

Unlike previous years, the Kenya National Examinations Council will not carry out physical assessment of candidates with special needs. The Council will rely on the reports written by both the headteachers and Medical (doctors) to determine the kind of assistance the candidates will be accorded during the examinations. It is imperative that the headteachers submit all the reports mentioned herein on all SNE candidates indicating the kind of assistance the candidates should be accorded during the examination.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (also referred to as KNEC or the Council) was established in 1980 under the Kenya National Examinations Council Act Cap 225A of the Laws of Kenya. This Act (Cap 225A of 1980) was repealed in 2012 and replaced with KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012.

* Any school that has between 6 and 15 candidates will be hosted by another center to be determined by the Sub County Director of Education.<br>
KNEC was established to take over the functions previously undertaken by the defunct East African Examinations Council and the Ministry of Education to conduct school, post school and other examinations. The establishment of the Council followed the breakup of the East African Community and the need for an institution to take over control of such examinations to ensure their validity and reliability; and to ensure conformity to Kenyas goals and changes in Government policy relating to the curriculum and examinations.

*undertake research on educational assessment;
 
*advice any public institution on the development and use of any system of assessment when requested to do so, and in accordance with such terms and conditions as shall be mutually agreed between the Council and the public institution;
 
*promote the international recognition of qualifications conferred by the Council;
 
*advice the Government on any policy decision that is relevant to, or has implications on, the functions of the Council or the administration of examinations in Kenya;

Eligibility


  • Individuals (Citizens and Non-citizens) who have undergone primary school education.

Fees


  1. KNEC will remit examination fees for all schools that receive Free Primary Education Funds
  2. All other schools and candidates including repeating candidates who do not fall under the above category are expected to deposit examination fees into the KNEC KCPE fees collection account before the deadline.
  3. Private candidates are required to pay the following fees;
  • Basic registration - KSh 800
  • Transfer fees (charge for changing from one center to another after registration) - KSh 500

All Examination fees must be paid through any of the following banks

  • Co-operative Bank.
  • National Bank of Kenya.
  • Equity Bank.
  • Kenya Commercial Bank.

Instructions


  1. Registration of candidates for the KNEC examinations is based on the Regulations and Syllabuses for specific examination which give the guidelines and procedures required for the registration of candidates.
  2. After all the information for the candidates has been keyed online, heads of institutions/schools MUST re-check the online report thoroughly to ensure that it is accurate. The head institution must then download the list of candidates, sign and stamp on the space provided and indicate all other details required in the nominal roll after verification.
  3. The Ministry of Education will remit examination fees for all KCPE and KCSE candidates for both private and public schools. However the following candidates will be required to pay examination fees:-
    • KCPE and KCSE private candidates
    • Candidates in prisons

Registration of Candidates with Special Needs for KCPE Exams
  1. The Kenya National Examinations Council has categorized the candidates with special needs as follows:-
    • Visually impaired - low vision and blind candidates
    • Hearing impaired candidates
    • Physically challenged candidates
    • Mentally Challenged candidates
  2. Information on the above candidates giving details of index number, subjects and degree of impairment must be captured during registration.
  3. For the mentally and physically impaired candidates and those who suffer psychomotor disorders the head teacher must write a letter on the same which MUST be accompanied by a recent detailed medical doctor’s report, a full size photograph for physical disability, an Education Assessment Resource Centre (EARC) officers assessment report on each of candidate’s functional ability. Candidates whose doctors’ medical reports are not received will NOT be considered for any assistance during the examination time.

Need for the Document


  • Registration allows the candidate to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E.) for the year they have applied for. This will enable them to acquire a K.C.P.E. Certificate.

Information which might help


  1. A candidate who withdraws from the examination will NOT be entitled to a refund.
  2. Candidates are expected to check in the KNEC website to ascertain the correctness of their entries before 31st March every year and to alert the SCEO’s office for any amendments to be effected before 31st March every year. No amendments will be effected after this.
  3. All candidates for both KCPE and KCSE examinations will be issued with an INDEX NUMBER as per the school’s ADMISSION REGISTER, NOT class performance as was the case in previous years
  4. Registration of candidates ends on 31st March every year. Any entries received at the Council after this date will not be accepted irrespective of when the money was deposited in the KNEC accounts. Private candidates should pay examination fees to the SCEO and should not deposit fees individually in the KNEC deposit accounts.
  5. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure the accuracy of his/her registration details. All candidates MUST report to the Sub County Education Officer (SCEO) to sign the nominal roll and to verify their registration details after the closure of the registration period.

A candidate is considered duly registered after fulfilling the following
  1. Candidate’s details are successfully uploaded onto the registration platform for the specific examination.
  2. The subjects are duly selected as per subject cluster as stipulated in the regulations governing the specific examination.
  3. Payment of fees where applicable (examination fees is not refundable or transferable to another candidate nor to another year)
  4. Submission of all the candidates’ registration materials to KNEC
  • All candidates must be registered where they have been learning. Registration in two centers (double registration) will be treated as an examination malpractice.
  • Private candidates are not allowed to individually deposit money-into the KNEC collection accounts and Sub-County Education Officers are asked to ensure compliance to this regulation.
  • There is no late registration for candidates.

  • Any school that has between 6 and 15 candidates will be hosted by another center to be determined by the Sub County Director of Education.
  • The information on such schools should be submitted to KNEC together with the registration materials.
  • The hosted school will retain its code during registration of candidates.
  • Schools with less than five (5) candidates are advised to register their candidates in another approved examination center.
