Once a vehicle arrive at the port of Entry the owner of the vehicle shall proceed with the registration and clearance of the vehicle with the Revenue Transportation officer at the port of Entry.

Attach on the application form the require Documents which include the following


  • Valid passport of the driver.
  • Vehicle registration book in the name of the driver.
  • Letter of authority from the registered owner if vehicle is not owned by the driver.
  • Temporary exportation document from the Customs authorities in the country from where the visitor is coming from.

Pay the required fees as required at the point of Entry.

Upon fulfillment of necessary requirements the Kenya Revenue transport officer will process the temporary permit


When registration application is approved, a Temporary vehicle import permit will be issued to the motor Vehicle owner the process will be completed in less than 24 hours subject to all documents being in proper order.

Thereafter, a temporary vehicle import permit will be issued.

The temporary vehicle import permit can be obtained from Kenya Revenue Authority, the official Kenyan issuing agency. One can purchase the permit up to six months prior to travel into Kenya.

  • Despite any advice, official or unofficial, to the contrary, vehicle permits cannot be obtained at checkpoints in the interior of Kenya.

Points to note

  • Drivers of the foreign registered vehicles should read and understand the declaration and undertaking at the bottom of the Temporary Import Permit before signing it and ensure all details entered are true and correct.
  • Any breach of the conditions governing the temporary importation of visitors vehicles will result in the vehicle being confiscated (seized).

EligibilityEdit

You must be owning a foreign private vehicle at the time of registration.

Types of vehicles eligible for temporary import permit (TIP)

  • Passenger type motor vehicles commonly known as saloon cars or sedans and station wagons.
  • Goods carrying motor- vehicles with a gross vehicle weight not exceeding 5 tonnes such as pick-ups and double cabs
  • Passenger carrying motor vehicles with a seating capacity not exceeding 15 people including the driver
  • Trailers and caravans pulled by the above vehicles.

Note

NB: Please note that any other vehicles which do not fit the above descriptions, for example a passenger carrying vehicle with seating capacity exceeding 15 people, would require a Commercial Temporary Import Permit (CTIP) covered by a Commercial Vehicle Guarantee obtainable from a Kenyan registered clearing agent with the relevant bond.

Please note that there is no charge for issuance of a TIP per se. However, there are other fees that are payable at the point of entry such as third party insurance, carbon tax and road access fees.

  • Cross rate $50.00
  • Light motor Vehicle $10.
  • Minibus $10.
  • Third party insurance is payable at US$30 per month for small private vehicles.

InstructionsEdit

The owner of the Vehicle has to renew the registration with the Kenya Transportation Office in Kenya by law upon entry into Kenya. A Compulsory Third-Party Liability (CTPL) insurance is required before the Government agency will approve of the registration of foreign private vehicle .

  • This insurance is supposed to compensate the family of any person who will become a casualty of a vehicular accident.
  • An inspection report which details the specifics of the vehicle and the corresponding emission test done to check the vehicle is in a good condition before it is permitted to be used on the public roads of Kenya upon entry into Kenya.

Need for the DocumentEdit

All visitor to Kenya bringing in a foreign registered private vehicle may be issued with a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) by Kenya Revenue Authority and upon entry into Kenya. A visitor is any person who is not resident in Kenya but travels to Kenya for a period of time specified at the time of their arrival. This includes Kenyan working or living in other countries and with valid residence or work permits of those particular countries.
