Kenya - Obtain a KEBS Standardization Mark Quality Permit

Apply In Person

  1. The request for a Standardization Mark Quality Permit shall be made to the Kenya Bureau Standards (KEBS) Offices. KEBS Regional Offices Contacts
  2. Applicants will be required to complete the Standardization Mark Permit Application Form STA-1, Declaration form STA-6, and Standards levy notification form( SL1) freely issued at any of the regional KEBS offices, or downloadable via the KEBS website KEBS KEBS Mark of Quality, form is located under the “Standardization Mark of Quantity” section or use these links to directly download the forms Standardization Mark Permit Application Form STA-1 and KEBS Declaration Form and Standards levy notification form( SL1) . To be submitted in duplicate (two identical forms).
  3. Upon obtaining the application forms, the applicant should legibly complete the forms, attach a valid copy of the certificate of incorporation and submit them to the KEBS - Revenue section for processing.
  4. The applicant is issued an Entry Number Letter, and a KEBS invoice to make payment against.
  5. After making payment share proof of payment with the KEBS-Cash Office and obtain a KEBS receipt. Please refer to the “Fees” section of this page for more information.
  6. Submit the complete file to the KEBS-One Stop Shop section, the KEBS officer shall then schedule a factory inspection visit and issue the applicant a initial-Routine Inspection form ( STA-10) (New applicants) to complete and submit it to KEBS before the inspection is carried out.
  7. During the inspection visit, the applicant will be required to supply the KEBS inspector with the Production process. The factory should have criteria for acceptance of raw materials in place, and the final output should be properly labeled and packaged (where applicable) in accordance with KEBS standards.
  8. Samples will be collected. Samples are analyzed at KEBS laboratories or other accredited/Designated laboratories to check compliance. The test report is sent to the applicant via email.
  9. If nonconformities are identified at the point of Inspection, the Manufacturer has the responsibility to undertake corrective action and inform KEBS to confirm the actions taken.
  10. If samples comply and the inspection officer’s report indicates compliance with codes of practice a recommendation is made for issuance of a permit to use standardization mark to the Permit Standardization committee (PSC) for standardization Mark.
  11. If samples fail to comply in the first instance and corrective action is reviewed for appropriateness retesting of parameters not complied with is done free of charge and if the product complies permit to use the standardization mark is issued
  12. If samples fail to comply in the second instance and subsequent tests, testing will be carried out at the expense of the manufacturer.
  13. Where the Permit Standardization Committee (PSC) approves the request, a permit is issued.
  14. While collecting the permit, the applicant will be required to present their identification document for verification.
  15. The applicant is also issued with a soft copy of the standardization mark to incorporate when branding their products. The standardization mark quality permit is valid for one year from the date of issue.

EligibilityEdit

  • All manufacturers are eligible to make the application.
  • An applicant for the food fortification logo must have a valid Standardization Mark or Diamond Mark for the food vehicle.

  • The costs are exclusive of VAT. ValidityEdit

  • The Diamond mark quality permit is valid for one year from the date of issue unless suspended, cancelled, or revoked by the Authority.
  • A renewal application should be submitted at least a month, before the expiration date of the current permit.

  • Standardzation Mark of Quality is a mark of excellence awarded to manufacturers (either based locally or abroad) which has demonstrated high degree of excellence in product manufacturing and quality standards as set by the Kenya bureau of standards (KEBS) which is regulating body.
