  • To operate a Mobile Phone Repair Business, one is required to obtain a single business permit/license which is a legal requirement for any business to run its operations smoothly and is issued by the County Government.


Apply In-Person:
Step 1: Reserve a business name

  1. Visit the department of the registrar of companies in the attorney general’s office to make the application for a name search and reservation.
  2. Present the proposed business names in order of preference so that a name search can be done.
  3. Upon successful completion of a name search, the business name will be reserved for a period of 60 days.
  4. During these 60 days, you can register the business name.


Step 2: Business name registration

  1. At the registrar of the company’s offices, you will be given Form BN/2 Statement of Particulars Registration to fill out and complete.
  2. Submit the completed application form and pay the prescribed application fee of Ksh 850.
  3. After verification of details, you will issue a business registration certificate.


Step 3: Obtain a single business permit.

  1. Start by visiting the county ward office to make your application for a new business permit.
  2. Applicant is issued an application form BR-1 Form by the ward licensing officer to fill and submit.
  3. You should fill in the required information and attach the documents to the application form. These include:-
    • Registered Business name
    • Physical address.
    • Business identification number,
    • Copy of certificate of incorporation,
    • National ID/Asylum Pass/ Passport No/ Alien ID
  4. After submission the ward licensing officer will visit your business premises within a day to carry out inspections.
  5. The information obtained by the inspection visit will determine the fees to charge for the permit. The BR-1 form is then stamped and you will be referred to the main county licensing office. E.g. City Hall for businesses in Nairobi.
  6. At the main licensing office, the form is approved and the data is entered into the single business permits database.
  7. This is followed by the generation of an invoice bill and payment is made to the cash office. The permit fees vary depending on the size of the business and from one county to another.
    • Application fee – Kshs. 200
  8. After making the payments, the business permit is signed and you will be advised to collect it from the dispatch office on the same day.
  9. Once you have acquired the permit, display it on your business premises as the law requires


Apply Online
Apply through the e-citizen portal:
Step 1: Log in to the e-citizen portal

  1. Go to the Kenyan government citizen services website e-citizen portal and register for an account, or if you already have one, log in and go to the services section and click on “Business Registration Service”.
  2. To register with eCitizen, follow the following steps;
    • Using a browser search the e-citizen portal
    • Fill in your full names as they appear on your national ID or passport Enter your ID number, and Enter your email address and phone number.
    • Activate your eCitizen account by verifying the link sent to your email address.
    • Create a password for your eCitizen account.
    • A confirmation SMS will be sent to your phone confirming the activation of your account


Step 2: Reserve a business name:

  1. After successful login to the e-citizen portal, click on the “Make Application” button. Here you will be making an application for registering your business name.
  2. indicate at least three (03) Preferred names of your business, Nature of business, Registered office address, Ownership information, and Application documents.
  3.  Once you have provided and submitted all the necessary details as listed on above point, the system will automatically generate a ‘BN 2 Form’ Download the BN 2 Form, sign it, and upload it back to the system.
  4. This service will cost KES150 and can be paid using mobile money, and debit cards. It will take a maximum of 2 working days for the business name to be approved.
  5. A business name awaiting registration may be reserved for a maximum of 30 days. This period may be extended for 30 more days, where you will pay an amount like the initial application fee of KES150. This will allow you more time (30 days) before you complete the business registration process.


Step 3: Pay for business name registration

  1. Once you have met all the requirements you will be required to pay for the registration fees of KES. 950 on the (eCitizen on business registration). It takes a maximum of 3-5 working days to have your application processed, however, the duration may vary depending on the number of applications.


Step 4: Obtain a certificate of registration

  1. The government of Kenya issues certification for all registered businesses. Once your registration application is approved, the certificate for your business will be available for download on the eCitizen platform where you made the application. You can print it out and use your Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificate to get a bank account that you will be using for your business.
  2. Users should ensure they log out of the system when they are done with the application process. This is to avoid unauthorized access to a third party(s) who may manipulate the information.


Apply through the Nairobi County e-Service Portal:
Step 1: Log in to the e-Service portal

  1. Using a browser visit the Nairobi County Self-Service Portal, and register for an account either as an individual or non-individual, if you already have one, log into the portal.
  2. To create an account, click on the “Create Account” tab, and proceed to enter the following registration details;
    • Identification document number, year of birth, mobile number/email address.
    • Enter the verification code (OTP) sent to the mobile number/email address.
    • Create a password for your eService account.
    • A confirmation SMS will be sent to your phone confirming the activation of the account.


Step 2: Register and obtain a Business Permit

  1. Once login to the portal, hover the cursor over the “ Service” option and select “Single Business Permit” on the extended menu under “Business License”.
  2. On the next window, the applicant will be required to provide the following information:
    • (Business Category, Business Details, Business Activity Information, Business Contact, Business Contact)
  3. An applicant is required to review the applicant and ensure that all the information for the application is accurate before proceeding, click on the “Next” tab to obtain an invoice for the business license.
  4. Top up the e-Wallet using the payment options provided. You will receive a confirmation text from Nairobi county that your payment has been received.
  5. Click on “Proceed to make payment”, and confirm details. ( Amount to be paid will be provided) to complete the registration and application process for the business permit/License.
  6. Download and print the provisional permit. A provisional Permit is an interim permit of the final Single Business Permit. The system will prompt you with two links, one will be to print the provisional Permit.
  7. After inspection and approval by the County officers, the final Single Business Permit (SBP) and Fire Certificate will be automatically generated by the system.
  8. The system will prompt you with two links, one will be to print your business permit and the other one will be about printing the receipt. Print the business permit by clicking on the print permit tab and also downloading it.
  9. Once you have printed the permit, display it on your business premises as the law requires.


For the counties of Mombasa, Kisumu, etc (Make an e-permit Online Application)

  1. Using a Browser Login, the County Government e-permit Online Application portal:
  2. New users should register for an account either as an individual or non-individual, if you already have one, log into the portal.
  3. To create an account, click on the “Create Account/Sign Up” tab, and proceed to enter the registration details to create an account with the portal.
  4. Once signed in, on the dashboard click “Add Business”, This will create a business profile that you can use for all your future applications.
  5. Fill in the online form and attach all the required documents, then select Continue. Preview your entries and if okay, select Submit.
  6. Upon successful payment, a Provisional Permit will be automatically generated by the system.
  7. Download and print the provisional permit. A provisional Permit is an interim permit of the final Single Business Permit. The system will prompt you with two links, one will be to print the provisional Permit.
  8. After inspection and approval by the County officers, the final Single Business Permit (SBP) and Fire Certificate will be automatically generated by the system.
  9. The system will prompt you with two links, one will be to print your business permit and the other one will be about printing the receipt. Print the business permit by clicking on the print permit tab and also downloading it.
  10. Once you have printed the permit, display it on your business premises as the law requires.

  • A business permit is issued to ensure that the respective business is compliant with the rules and regulations for that specific type of business.
  • It also comes in handy when you want to acquire a business loan or apply for government tenders among other things.
  • It provides a way for which the County Government collects its taxes so as to improve service delivery.

  • The procedure for obtaining a business permit is the same but the cost might vary depending on the size, type, and location of the business.
  • A separate application form must be completed in respect of each separate business establishment.
  • The permit is issued under County Government act No. 17 of 2012 laws of Kenya.
  • Any offense under this act shall be dealt with in accordance with any written laws/act of this County and all the relevant county rules/regulations.

  • Granting this permit does not exempt the business identified above from complying with the current regulations on fire and safety as established by the Government of Kenya.
  • Granting this permit does not exempt the business identified above from complying with the current regulations on health and safety as established by the Government of Kenya.
  • It is a legal requirement that the Trade License be displayed in a conspicuous place. A licensee who fails to display the permit shall be guilty of an offense and liable to a fine not exceeding five hundred shillings.
