Kenya - Application for Temporary License for Foreign Trained Medical Students (Elective)

Foreign-trained medical students wishing to undertake a medical elective placement in Kenyan as part of their medical degree can make an application for a temporary license as a foreign medical trained student (Elective) by visiting the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) offices to make the application. The contact information of the KMPDC offices can be found in the “Office Location & Contact” Section of this page.
Here the applicant will be given an Application for Temporary License for Foreign-Trained Medical Students (Elective) to fill and submit. The application form can also downloaded from the KMPDC’s official website through the following link.
- Make sure you are eligible to make to make this application. The “Eligibility” requirements are mentioned in the eligibility section of this page.
Fill in the application form completely.
- Make sure you indicate in the application form that it is a “New Application”.
Attach all the required documents to the completed application form. A list of the required documents is mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page. These include:-
- Copy of ID/Passport
- Copy of current license
- Current colored passport size photo
- Certified copies of transcripts (translated by the respective Embassy)
- Introduction letter/job offer from the institution offering electives
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Certificate of proficiency in English;
- Evidence of employment (if any)
Submit the completed application form and all the required documents to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s offices and proceed to pay the required fees. Details of the required fees for licensing are provided in the “Fees” Section of this page.
Submit the payment receipt to the KMPDC Offices for processing .
- At this point the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will go through your application documents to determine their authenticity and if they meet the requirements.
Upon completion of the registration process , the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will contact the applicant to collect their Temporary Foreign Medical Student License in person.
- The whole process is usually completed after a period of five days.
The applicant will be required to produce proof of identity when collecting the Temporary Foreign Medical Student License.
The applicant can use the license during the placement period. The license has a validity of one year.

This allows the medical student to see/experience the medical field from a different perspective and helps them to hone their medical skills in a challenging hospital setting.

A medical elective is a placement undertaken as part of a medical degree. The content and setting of the placement are largely decided by the student undertaking it, with some students choosing to spend it in a different country.
Undertaking a medical elective in a developing country like Kenya allows you to see the medical field in a different perspective. Through mentorship and close supervision, you will be able to gather hands on experience in various clinical specialties as well as shadow the doctors delivering various medical services.
Placements abroad give the experience of differing practices, but also allow students to encounter medical conditions they are less used to seeing at home.
A placement in a particular specialist setting may allow students insight into a potential career path, or allow students to participate in the research or implementation of new treatments or practices.
