  1. The application for Medical Internship Qualifying Examination for Foreign Trained Doctors, shall be made to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) offices.   2. Applicants should collect and complete Application for Internship Qualifying Examination/For Foreign-Trained Doctors/East Africa Community Reciprocal Recognition- Form XXIII, available at the KMPDC offices or download it via the KMPDC website KMPDC Downloads, (scroll down the page and then click on the “Other Form” option to locate the form) or directly download it using this Application for Internship Qualifying Examination/For Foreign-Trained Doctors/East Africa Community Reciprocal Recognition Form XXIII.
  3. Submit the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, in addition to the duly completed application form, in all respect, to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) Office either in person or via the following email address [email protected], before the deadline of the registration for the examination.
  4. The application shall be accompanied by proof of payment of an application fee of Ksh. 5,000.00 and Examination/Evaluation of qualification papers Ksh.30, 000.00 as mentioned in the “Fees” section below.
  5. Upon receipt of the application, the receiving officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
  6. If the receiving officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application, it is registered for consideration and the applicant is issued/sent an acknowledgment slip/mail as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  7. The applicant will be registered and issued an internship qualifying examination card that should be produced while taking the examinations and a timetable showing the dates when and where the dental internship qualifying examinations will be held.
  8. The written examination is often taken at the Council's premises and it takes three (03) hours, while the Practical (Clinical) exams are admitted mainly from Kenyatta National Hospital (Medical) and University of Nairobi (Dental) Hospital the duration of the exams depends on cases assigned.
  9. The pass mark is 50% aggregated. One must also get 50% in Clinicals.
  10. The applicants will be notified when the exam results are out, which usually takes two (02) weeks after sitting for the exams.
  11. Candidates who pass the Internship Qualifying Exam will required to apply for a Medical Practitioners Internship License, to be able to proceed with their internship training after being duly posted to various Internship Training Centers by the Ministry of Health.   12. Candidates who fail the exams are allowed a maximum of only three (3) exam attempts. All appeals are addressed to the Chairperson of the Council on the email [email protected].

  • Copy of ID/Passport.
  • Coloured passport size photo.
  • Certified copies of professional certificates.
  • Recent updated Curriculum Vitae.
  • Qualification; Form IV or VI Certificate
  • Must be attached at a training institution approved by the Council for a period of 4 months.
  • Evidence of appropriate linguistic skills in English and/or Kiswahili for non-Kenyans.
  • Evidence of registration from EAC Partner States Board’s and councils (for those applying for reciprocal registration)
  • Letter from Commission for University Education (CUE) confirming recognition of the medical/dental school (if foreign-trained)
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Verification Form
  • Proof of payment of the Application fee Ksh.5,000.00 and Examination/Evaluation of qualification papers Ksh.30,000.00
  • Any other documents may be deemed necessary or as may be prescribed by the KMPDC office.


NOTE: Original degree certificate, ID, and passport must be sighted before the application is submitted

EligibilityEdit

  • Foreign trained doctors who possess qualifications equivalent to MBChB and BDS from the University of Nairobi are required to sit Council exams in order to determine their eligibility for either internship training.
  • Note: Graduates from the East African Partner States (EAC) who qualify from approved medical and dental schools are however exempted from Board exams under EAC Boards/Councils Reciprocal Recognition.

ValidityEdit

  • Every dental officer intern shall be required to undergo an internship training program for a period of twelve months (12), and an additional one calendar month of paid leave.

InstructionsEdit

Are Doctors on internship required to comply with the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Requirements.

  • Every doctor has to comply with the CPD requirements of acquiring a minimum of 50 points within a calendar year.
  • Since the Internship is a full-time training period, the doctors are expected to upload the internship completion certificate in their Integrated CPD Management System portal upon registration. This earns them 50 CPD Points.

The Council administers exams to foreign-trained doctors, three (03) times a year. The months of January, April, and September.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • An internship qualifying examination is a written or oral examination or both which determines the suitability/eligibility for foreign-trained graduates who hold a degree recognized by the Council to undergo internship training in Kenya.
  • It is an offense to undertake internship training without an internship license.

  • The intern shall concurrently acquire skills in the dental disciplines outlined below, throughout the period of internship: The rotations are outlined as follows:
    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – 11 weeks
    • Prosthetics and Conservative Dentistry – 11 weeks
    • Periodontology – 11 weeks
    • Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics – 11 weeks
    • Community Dentistry
  • Every intern, whether medical or dental, shall participate in community health practice as part of the internship program. This shall be done every Friday of the week for the entire duration of the internship (fifty-two weeks). The interns shall spend eight hours every week (total 416 hours for the year), supervised by the Family Health Physician/Dental Public Health Specialist, providing health services to the community

  • Guiding relatives and patients with regards to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Documenting and updating patients' notes.
