ProcedureEdit

  • The certification activities of Bureau of Indian Standards are de-centralized to its five regional offices. The central region located in Delhi, the eastern region located in Kolkata, the northern region located in Chandigarh, the southern region located in Chennai and the western region located in Mumbai.
  • The Deputy Director General (Region) is the granting, renewing and cancellation authority of the licence and this activity is coordinated by the Management Systems Certification Officer of the region.



Apply In-Person:

  1. Applicant shall approach Branch Office under whose dominion the manufacturing unit is located.

  4. Applicant shall submit the filled application form with required documents as per our required document section along with demanded fee.
  5. Submitted application will be verified by the authorities. If all are in place submitted application will be accepted.
  6. Applicant will be provided with receipt for submission of application.
  7. BIS will assign an officer to evaluate the factory to ensure the manufacturer’s capability in producing goods as per the specified standards of the bureau for that category.
  8. The samples are collected and tested in the BIS labs. Once the satisfactory results are obtained the manufacturer is provided with the license and ISI number to be used on the product’s packaging.



NOTE:
  • All foreign registered users having no liaison office or branch office located in India have to appoint Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) as per the guidelines issued by BIS in the prescribed nomination form.

Apply Online:

Step – 1: Registration on BIS

  • First the applicant has to make the registration via online through the following link link
  • The applicant can enter their user ID and password to Login or the applicant can register their new account by clicking on “Create your BIS account”
  • After login kindly click “Apply for Product Certification” in the menu and fill the application forms with all necessary details.
  • The applicant has to upload all the necessary documents that are mentioned in “Required Documents” section of this page.
  • Next the applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested and download the receipt as a proof of payment.
  • The authority will review the application and a soft copy of the application will be send to the applicants registered email.



Step – 2: Physical Submission

  • After receiving the soft copy of the application, the applicant has to print the application and sign the application and attach the necessary documents that are mentioned in the application.

    • Hardcopies of the application must be submitted within 15 days of the online submission of the application. Or the application will be treated as closed.



Step - 3: Lab Testing of Products

  • After submission Products go for laboratory testing at a BIS recognised lab.
  • The testing Lab provides a detailed Test Report of such Product based on which the process of obtaining Product Certification goes ahead.



Step 4: Objection Raised By BIS

  • On submission of the application with BIS, the BIS will scrutinise the application.
  • All queries will raise by the BIS will be replied via without any further delay.



Step 5: Inspection of Manufacturing Unit

  • The appropriate authority goes for inspection of the manufacturing unit.
  • If the applicant fails to confirm all the compliances required for Product Certification, then its application proceeds for rejection or closure, and so the applicant files a new application.
  • The applicant has to ensure that on the day of inspection, the products, required machinery and testing facility are available with it.
  • The applicant provides the production process along with the production or quality control staff.
  • Applicant also ensures the testing of samples and generates a test report.
  • If such an inspection officer points out any loophole at the time of inspection, then he has to share the same with the Advisory report.
  • And after satisfactory inspection and verification of samples at the manufacturing unit, seal the samples and counter samples of the products as per the guidelines in the product manual.



Step 6: Issuance of Certificate

  • After receiving the test report or after inspection and with no other action pending, BIS or the appropriate authority proceeds with the application for grant of Product Certificate, and after payment of the required government fee, the BIS issues the Product Certification.
  • The Processing time of the procedure takes up to 30 – 45 days.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • ISI or Indian Standard Institute has a 7 digit number allotted by the Bureau of Indian Standards. CM/L number is compulsory for ISI marks and without this it cannot be sold in the Indian market as a ISI certified product.
  • A product having an ISI mark has many benefits. Hence make sure that ISI license is obtained.

  • If there is any falsification or counterfeit of the ISI trademark is found, then the offender is liable to pay a penalty of Rs 50,000 or as applicable. He can also suffer imprisonment, which may extend to one year.
