Apply In-Person
- To get into a Court marriage in person, the applicant has to first to visit the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate office or Collector office of the state/district. The address and contact details of the office can be found in the following link: Contact Details.
- Visit the office and obtain a form for Notice for Marriage from the relevant department.
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Complete the notice form as required with appropriate details and submit it with required documents to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
- On receipt of the application package, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate will publish the notice in a newspaper 30 days before the decided date of marriage.
- If there is no objection for the published notice, the applicant will be notified and invited for completion of the marriage registration/solemnization.
- After 30 days from the notification, the couple should visit the Marriage Registrar’s office with all the required documents and three witnesses for the marriage.
- Then, the marriage will be solemnized by the Registrar and the couple will be provided with the Certificate of Marriage after all the necessary processes.

- No objection certificate or marital status certificate from the concerned Embassy or Consulate (non-citizens)
- Certificate of spouse’s death or divorce (in case if any previous marriages)

EligibilityEdit
- Any couple in Jammu and Kashmir, who wish to enter in a legal marriage, can apply.
- Any couple, in which any one of them is a non-citizen, are eligible.
- People interested in special marriages (i.e.) marrying persons from religions other than theirs, can apply.
- The male spouse should be above 21 years of age and the female should be above 18 years of age.

- Court marriages can be solemnized on any day from Monday to Saturday and the time taken for the execution of the process varies from state to state.
- The witnesses for the marriage are a necessity and it is important that there should be at least three Indian witnesses.
- In case of marriages with non-citizens, it is necessary that the law of foreign spouse’s nation should not contradict Indian law.
