Apply In-Person

  1. If you have a foreign driver’s license you can drive in Jamaica for twelve months, then after that you will have to obtain a local driver’s license by visiting the Island Traffic Authority (ITA)
  2. Obtain the application for a new driver’s license at any office of the Island Traffic Authority (ITA), Tax Office or download an electronic version from the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) website:Link scroll down to find “Form F1 & F3 - Application for Driver's Licence (Private & Motor Cycle Driver's Licence)” or you can download the application form directly via this link: Link
  3. Fill the application form accordingly and then take it to a Justice of peace or a Superintendent of police or a member of the attorney to certify the application
  4. Pay the driver’s license examination fee of $1000 at the Tax Office or the nearest examination depot (debit/credit card only) and obtain the payment receipt.
  5. Contact the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) in the parish you are residing in to book an appointment for the driver’s license examination
  6. On the appointment date, visit the ITA with your current driver’s license and the driver’s license examination payment receipt attached to the certified driver’s license application form
  7. Then submit the complete application to the ITA official at the service desk for verification
  8. Once verified, you will undergo a test for reading ability, road code, and or mechanical knowledge and if required you will be needed to complete a yard test which you will be required to pass and then proceed to complete a full sentence of the examination
  9. Then the examination department will enter your results into their system and forward your documents (Certificate of Competence) to a specified Tax office for processing of your driver’s license
  10. Visit the Tax office where your certificate of competence was sent, and pay the license fees at the cashier and obtain the payment receipt
  11. You will be required to fill the necessary forms and you may be asked to do a reading test.
  12. Then the officer will confirm your information in their database and then take your photograph
  13. You will be issued your driver’s license at the end of the processing period

InstructionsEdit

  • Fill out the application form without signing the application form.
  • Get your documents and photo attested from a Justice of the Peace who will be willing to sign the documents and the photo for a fee.
  • Visit the Examination Depot with all the documents, photos, receipt of payment in the Tax office and set an appointment to take the exam.
  • Try to get some guidance about Jamaican driving. This can be done by getting "The Jamaican Driver Guide" which can be obtained from book stores.
  • Visit the examination depot on the day and the time of appointment.
  • You will have to go through a reading test and questions related to road signs which you have to answer.
  • If you are successful with the test, you will be getting your driver license in the Tax office
