Apply In-Person

  1. To apply to be a voluntary contributor under the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), you have to submit your application to the NIS office under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS). please view the NIS contact details in the “Offices and Contact” section below
  2. Obtain the application form from the NIS office in person or download the form from the MLSS website through this link:Link (choose “Voluntary Contribution Form” and download the form)
  3. Read the instruction provided and complete the application form correctly.
  4. Prepare the required supporting documents and attach them to the application form
  5. Once your application form and all supporting information and documents have been completed, signed, stamped, and certified where required, go to the NIS office and submit the application to the NIS official at the service desk
  6. The NIS will verify your application and confirm if you meet the eligibility criteria to be a voluntary contributor
  7. Once everything has been ascertained and the application is successful, then NIS will approve your application
  8. After approval, you will be registered with the NIS as a voluntary contributor and issued the relevant documents by the NIS proving your registration


Note:

  • If you are abroad or unable to apply in person, you can select a representative to submit the complete application on your behalf
  • The representative must submit a letter of authorization, signed, stamped, and dated by a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace (J.P.) authorizing him/her to act on your behalf

EligibilityEdit

If you wish to be a voluntary contributor you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • be an insured person
  • You must have paid a total of at least 52 weekly contributions if you are ordinarily resident in Jamaica, or a total of at least 156 if you are not ordinarily resident in Jamaica
  • You should be not liable to pay contributions.


Note:that a woman aged 60 years and over or a man aged 65 years and over who have retired from regular employment is no longer an insured person under the National Insurance Act and, therefore cannot become a voluntary contributor.

A voluntary contributor is a person who does not contribute as employed or self-employed and/or is no longer liable to contribute because of the following:

  • You have retired from full-time employment before reaching the retirement age
  • You have relocated to another country that does not have a Reciprocal Social Security Agreement with Jamaica for an indefinite period
  • You have become unemployed and you wish to continue contributing to the NIS.
