Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Renewal of a Work Residence Permit in Ghana, the applicant has to contact the Ghana Immigration Service Centre (GIS). Contact link
2. An applicant has to approach the immigration service centre and the applicants can get their application form for permanent resident permit.
3. Applicant must provide necessary information in the application form.
4. The applicant has to make sure that he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
5. Applicant should attach photocopies of the documents (whichever is necessary) along with the applicant from while submitting it at the office.
6. Then submit the complete application dossier to the GIS official at the Work residence Permit Unit - Employment Division service desk.
7. The official will verify the application to confirm if the form is completed as required and check if all the required supporting documents have been provided.
8. After the verification process, applicant will be issued with the acknowledgment receipt of the application.
9. The official will evaluate the application and if it meets the required standards, the application will be approved for processing.
10. The applicant will then be notified of the approval through his/her contact details and the applicant will be required to pay the prescribed work permit fees and annual fees within one month of the approval. Pay the required work resident permit fees and the annual fees at the GIS cashier desk within the one-month period. Please refer to the fees details in the “Fees” section of this page.
11. Upon payment, the work permit will be renewed and issued to the applicant.
12. Even in the case of changes (address, work, status, marital status and transfer to another district, etc.) the renewal should be made on the same residence permit document.
13. The Processing time for this procedure takes2- 4 weeks.

Please Note:

• Note that failure to pay these fees within one month, the decision to grant the work permit will be revoked.
• Note that incomplete applications and those not accompanied by the required documents will not be accepted.

• Support letter from the immediate project supervisor
• Photocopy of employees passport and valid business visa
• Five (5) passport photos of employee
• Support letter from the Ministry under which an applicant will be working

Private organizations:

• Investment certificate issued by the Investment Agency
• Business License of employing company
• Trading license if head office of employer is located outside Ghana

Non Government Organizations:

• Registration certificate from charities and societies agency
• Photocopy of employees passport and valid business visa
• Five (5) passport photos of employee
• Support letter from the Ministry under which an applicant will be working
• Recommendation letter from employer
• Education certificates and
• Work experience evidence

The report filled with the Regional Employment Office must contain:

• An application for a work card.
• A copy of the letter of application for the work card.
• A draft employment contract
• CV of the employer
• Proof or evidence of the professional skills and expertise of the applicant.
• Job description.

Eligibility

• The applicant for renewal of a work permit in Ghana must be foreigner invited for employment in by a registered company in the country.

Fees

• Work permit 400,000/=
• Renewal 200,000/=
• Replacement 168,000/=

Validity

• Work residence permit card and Visa for settlement are usually valid for three (3) years.

• Work Residence Permits must be renewed prior to expiry every one to three years through the same process of applying for a permit.

• Renewal work resident permit application forms are obtainable at the Ghanaian Immigration Services (GIS) office. The form requires three classes of information: Company, Employee and Employment contract details.
