Procedure

Apply In person

1. To Apply for Passport in Ghana, the applicant has to approach the Ghana Visa Application Centre (VAC) or Ghana immigration service office contact link
2. Then, the applicant must obtain the application form from Ghana Visa Application Centre (VAC) or Ghana immigration service office.
3. Fill up the application form. Do not forget to affix your right thumb print and sign the form. Please avoid making erasures on the form, erasures may result to your application being rejected. Exercise extreme caution in completing the forms as mistakes cannot be corrected once the passport has been issued.
4. Submit the completed application form along with all other required documents in person to the nearest Immigration office in your locality.
5. Ask the Immigration officer-in-charge to examine all submitted documents and check to see if the application form was duly completed. Inspection of documents must be done in his/her presence.
6. Pay the processing fee of 100,000.00 or GH10.00 for fresh passports and 500,000 or GH50 .00 for replacement of lost passports. Do not forget to ask for a receipt.
7. The date of collection of passport shall be written on his/her payment receipt.
8. Between the immigration office and the passport office his/her application will be processed for issue.
9. The Passport Office shall inform his/her in writing in case there are any queries regarding him/her application.
10. His/her passport shall be ready for pick up within 30 days upon submission of the application form and all other required documents.
11. Collect your Passport in person from the District or Regional Immigration Office in his/her region.
12. Affix his/her signature on the passport in the presence of the immigration officer when applicants collect his/her passport.
13. Generally, the processing time for this procedure is taken 3-15 days.

Eligibility

• Ghanaian citizens (as defined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana Chapter 3 Section 6) may submit application to obtain a passport.
• Ghanaian citizenship may be obtained:
• By birth (where either parent or grandparent is a Ghanaian citizen)
• By virtue of marriage
• By applying for naturalization

• Processing fee of 100,000.00 or GH10.00 for fresh passports.

Validity

• Passport Validity for 10 years.

• A Ghanaian passport is the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document for Ghanaians who travel abroad.

• Applicant's maiden name, if applicable
• Profession or occupation:
• Examples: Teacher, doctor, public/civil servant etc.
• Please do not put your title like, AL haji, Reverend Etc.
• Social Security Number, if you have one
• Last educational institution attended

Need for the Document

• A passport is a document, issued by the national government. It certifies the identity and nationality of the holder for travel abroad. It contains information about the holder; like name, gender, date and place of birth.
• This document does not in itself entitle the passport holder entry into another country, or consular protection while abroad nor any other privileges. However, it does normally allow the passport holder to return to the country where the passport was issued. A right to consular protection arises from international treaties, while the holder's return to the issuing country depends on the laws prevailing in that country.

Information which might help

• If you have used-up all the pages of your passport and damaged your passport, you may request for a new passport to be issued. Attach the old passport when you apply for a new one. In case of a damaged passport with valid visa, apply for a new passport and then to the Embassy concerned for a replacement visa.
• Change of Name/Status of a holder of a passport an only be applied in the Passport Office by the director of Passports. Do no tamper with your passport or insert the names of your children yourself.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate
