Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Obtain Special Flight Permit in Ghana, the applicant has to contact the nearest Civil Aviation Authority Office in Ghana.

3. The   applicant   shall   submit a written application together with one passport size photograph and pay the prescribed fee and shall complete an application form.
4. The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section or this page.
5. When all the conditions have been met, and have been satisfactorily certified by the Authority’s Licensing Office, the applicant will be advised to pay the prescribed fees found under the "Fees" section of this page.
6. A processing time of 7 days is needed to complete the processing of the Special Flight Permit, after which his/her will be contacted through a phone call to collect your approval certificate at the GCAA offices.
7. Applicant will be required to carry your identification documents when collecting your approval certificate.

Required Documents

• Application form
• A properly executed maintenance endorsement in the aircraft permanent record by a person or organization authorized in accordance with the Civil Aviation (Airworthiness) Regulations, stating that the subject aircraft has been inspected and found to be safe for the intended flight.
• Payment receipt of the prescribed fees.

Eligibility

The Authority may issue a special flight permit for an aircraft that is capable of safe flight but unable to meet applicable airworthiness requirements for the purpose of:

• Flying to a base where weighing, painting, repairs, modifications, maintenance, or inspections are to be performed or to a point of storage.
• Flying for the purpose of experimenting with or testing the aircraft including its engines and equipment.
• Flying for the purpose of qualifying for the issue, renewal or validation of certificate of airworthiness or restricted certificate of airworthiness and the approval of a modification of the aircraft.
• Delivering or exporting the aircraft.
• evacuating aircraft from areas of impending danger and
• operating at mass in excess of the aircraft's maximum certified takeoff mass for flight beyond normal range over water or land areas where adequate landing facilities or appropriate fuel are unavailable with the excess mass limited to additional fuel, fuel-carrying facilities, and navigation equipment necessary for the flight.

Validity

• A special flight permit is valid for a period of time specified in the permit.
• A Special Flight Permit is NOT renewable. When it expires, a new application should be submitted for another permit to be issued.

Instructions

The applicant should:

• Complete the PPL prescribed application form.
• Complete the flying experience summary form.
• Submit Class 2 Medical Certificate together with all the required documents to the GCAA offices.
• Pay the applicable fees and submit the payment receipt.
• Wait for the processing period to elapse then collect your PPL license.

Need for the Document

A person should not fly an aircraft unless there is in force in respect of that aircraft a certificate of airworthiness or restricted certificate of airworthiness or a special flight permit duly issued or rendered valid under the law of the State of Registry and any conditions subject to which the certificate was issued or rendered valid are complied with. The Authority may issue a special flight permit for an aircraft that is capable of safe flight but unable to meet applicable airworthiness requirements for the purpose of:

• Flying to a base where weighing, painting, repairs, modifications, maintenance, or inspections are to be performed or to a point of storage.
