Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Applicant has to approach the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Head Office in Ghana and applicant can get their application form for Convert or Exchange Foreign Driver License contact link
2. Applicant has to enter all information in the application form.
3. Applicant must make sure to carry both photocopies and originals of all documents are necessary for completing this procedure.
4. Applicant should attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the applicant from while submitting it at the office.
5. Please refer to the fees details in the “Fees” section of this page.
6. Road signs and rod marking test (when the need arises).
7. If all above mentioned procedures were followed properly by the applicant, the application form will be viewed by concerned authorities and the applicant will be notified regarding their License.
8. They can visit the office and get their License after getting that notification.
9. Generally, the processing time for this procedure takes 3 months.

Required Documents

• Valid foreign driver’s license (information on licenses that are not in English must be translated by certified translator(s)).
• Clear photocopy of the foreign license.
• Original Passport not expired. (Foreign Nationals only)
• Clear photocopy of Passport.
• Clear photocopy of Resident Permit (One Year Validity).
• Letter from an employer.
• Form of Driving Records
• Introduction letter from employers in Ghana (Foreign Nationals only).
• Non-Citizen Registration Card (Foreign Nationals only).
• Resident permit or the Dual Citizenship registration card.
• Show original payment receipt.
• Any other document that may be required by the licensing Authority from either nationals or foreign nationals.

Eligibility

• All persons who are holders of a valid foreign driver’s license can have their licenses converted to a Ghanaian driver’s license.
• All non-nationals applying for conversion must be legally resident in Ghana. For not less than 12 months. Evidence would be required such as: (EG: RESIDENT PERMIT, WORKING PERMIT)

Need for the Document

• Section 55 of road traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683) provides that a driving license issued under the corresponding provisions of any law of force in any other country may be recognized for conversion into driving license issued under this Act, and under such conditions that the licensing authority may from time to time prescribe.
