- To Contracting a Civil Marriage in Ghana, the applicant has to approach the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. Contact link
- Also refer to the addresses mentioned in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this procedure.
- Then, the applicant must obtain the application form from U.S. Embassy office.
- Applicant should read carefully in the application form, after all details must be filled in the application form.
- Documents that are needed for this procedure are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
- Submit the completed forms along with the supporting documents at the respective office for verification and processing.
- This application will be processed and information will be verified by the U.S. Embassy office.
- If the verification is successful, the notification will be sent to the applicant.
- After getting the notification from concerned authorities, applicant can visit the office to collect their contract certificate.
- If there is no information regarding the application, then, the applicant can visit the office to know status of the application.
- Generally, the processing time for this procedure is 3 months.

- 2 recent passport size photos
- Proof of nationality for example a voters card, passport or national identification card
- An LC 1 letter to prove residence in Kampala district for at least 15 days
- A passport size photograph for identification
- Marriage affidavits that conform with S.10 of the Marriage Act
- In case of foreign nationals, a letter from your Civil Registration or Vital Statistics Office confirming that the party is not married
- Slip and receipt of payment

- Fees payable: EGP. 85,000.
ValidityEdit
- A marriage certificate is valid until one of the spouse’s death or in the event of an absolute divorce.

InstructionsEdit
- Civil marriages are conducted in the Registrar of Marriages, Deputy County Commissioners or Assistant County Commissioners offices.
- A marriage certificate is obtained if you and your spouse have agreed to marry and there is no objection to the marriage.
- Both parties must be at least 18 years of age and must get in touch with the registrar of marriages to register and legalize their union.
- Parties must complete the notice of intention which runs for 21 days but can apply for a special license which waves the 21 day period but attracts extra fees. The registrar of marriages has the right to give or deny the special license.
- After the 21 day period, both parties are to present themselves to the Registrar of Marriages, Deputy County Commissioners or Assistant County Commissioners offices for the marriage ceremony.

Need for the DocumentEdit
- The certificate gives you the eligibility to inherit your spouse’s property and also jointly own properties without fear of being denied the right to share the matrimonial property when your spouse dies.
- The certificate enables your spouse joining your health benefits.
- The certified is needed when Applying for foreign visa as one of the couple is working in a foreign country.
- The certificate is needed when applying for passport and/or some other such document, which contains the name of one’s spouse.
- It will be very handy if you have to prove that you are legally married couple in front any authority.

- After a marriage has been celebrated; the Registrar of Marriages is mandated to register the said marriage if satisfied that the marriage was celebrated in compliance with the provisions of the Marriage Act, 2014.
Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
- The certificate is needed for Spouses to file joint taxes and receive tax breaks.
- If the applicant plan on buying a house and need to apply for a mortgage loan, many lenders will ask for a marriage certificate. This is so lenders can check your credit history jointly and separately.
- Marriage certificate can also help the applicant migrate with your family to any country without many restrictions.
- If wife changes her second name and adopts the husbands. All her old documents are in her maiden name. The marriage certificate will bind them to her as it will show both her maiden name and the new adopted name.
