Procedure[edit]

1.The applicant must start find out about the procedure and the requirement for one to successfully register a marriage in Djibouti. This is done by going to the Ministry of Interior and making an inquiry about the required information;

2.When the required information is obtained, the applicant must proceed with preparing all the requirements including all the required documents;

3.With the necessary documents, the applicant submits application for a marriage license to the Ministry of

4.Interiors Office of Population (Direction de la Population);

5.The submitted documents when received are reviewed and assessed by marriage officials at the Office of Population (Direction de la Population); and after assessing, decision is made to either register or not to register marriage;

6.When registration of marriage is accepted, the Office of Population (Direction de la Population) arranges an appoint with an authorized mayor to perform the marriage ceremony;

7.When an appointment is secured, the Office of Population (Direction de la Population) then informs the applicant about the appointment date and time;

8.At the appointment date and time, the mayor performs the marriage ceremony and a marriage certificate is issued immediately after the marriage ceremony is completed;

Required Documents[edit]

1.Proof of Birth and age (Birth certificate);

2.Proof of nationality (Passport / National Identity Card / National Birth Certificate);

3.Evidence of legal eligibility to marry (For instance if divorced - previous marriage certificate and the divorce decree dissolving the marriage);

4.Pre-marital medical examination certificate.;

5.Photocopies of Identification Documents of two witnesses;

6.Copy of marriage contract (in case where the applicants had earlier been married before a notary public);

7.Copy of marriage certificate (in case where the applicants had earlier gotten married either traditionally or religiously;

8.Passport, with visa that has at least 3 months validity (foreign applicants);

9.Certificate of Residence (foreign applicants

Population Office charges (reviewing and processing documents and conducting marriage ceremony at the Mayor's Office) 50,000 DJF approx. USD 283



Validity[edit]

A marriage is valid as long as the both parties are alive and have not obtained any of the following documents:-

1.a decree of annulment;

2.an official order of divorce; or

Instructions[edit]

1.Applicants must be in the country at the type of submitting applicants;

2.Applicants can either be nationals or foreigners;

3.Foreigners must be legally authorized to stay in the country;

4.Foreigners must have stayed in the country for a period of not less than three (3) months prior to submission of application;

5.Foreign applicants must obtain a marriage license at the Ministry of Interiors Office of Population (Direction de la Population);

6.There must be witnesses at the time of cerebrating marriages;

7.Each party must have at least one witness;

8.Applicants must ensure that they fulfill the traditional requirements before applying for registration of marriage;

9.Application for registration of marriage must be submitted early enough before the proposed marriage date;

10.Applicants must take note of the days and hours when the registration authority operates;

11.Once marriage applicant must ensure that the previous marriage is legally dissolved;

12.Citizens living abroad may register marriage at any nearby Djibouti embassy or consulate office;

Need for the Document[edit]

Marriage is a process in life where two people come to a common understanding and make life-long commitment to each other. For a marriage in Djibouti to be legally recognized, it must be registered with the Office of Population under the Ministry of Interior.



Information which might help[edit]

1.Foreign applicants who do not have valid visa with the required validity must ensure that they obtain a residence prior known as Carte de Sjour to accompany their application;

2.Pre-marital medical examination certificate can be obtained from any registered medical person in Djibouti; and it must be specifically for marriage purpose;
