Colorado - Obtain Marriage License
ProcedureEdit
- Both parties should be present when applying for a marriage license. If this is not possible, one party must appear with a completed and notarized absentee affidavit as well as approved original identification for the absent party. Applicants for a marriage license need not be Colorado residents.
- Present and submit the required documents.
- Fill out an application form.
- Pay the license fee.
- Have your witness sign the form.
- Receive your marriage license.
Marriage Solemnization
Ceremony can be performed by judges, retired judges, magistrates, Indian tribe officials and clergy, or by the couple themselves.

EligibilityEdit
- Both parties must be of legal age, 18 years old or above.
- For those ages 16 and 17, parental consent is required from both parents.
- For ages 15 and below, a court order granting judicial approval as well as complying with the above requirements is required.
Note: Marriage licenses can be obtained for same-sex couples in Colorado.

- Both parties must appear in person. If one party cannot appear due to illness, is out of state, or incarcerated, he or she must obtain an Absentee Application from the Clerk and Recorder's office.
- Different rules in getting a marriage license varies from state to state, so it is important to check with your city's marriage bureau at your clerk of court's office to find out what your local rules are.
- Apply for a marriage license for at least one month before the wedding ceremony.
- A witness is required when signing an application for marriage license.
- The bride must know what her married name will be before she signs the marriage certificate. The name must be written on the application.
- A justice of the peace or a religious clergyman is required to sign the document.
- A marriage license may be issued in any county and used in any county in the State of Colorado.
