ProcedureEdit

  • Applications submitted by mail must include photocopies of original identification documents, such as a passport and a birth certificate.
  • Applicants who pass the initial security check will be interviewed at a joint Canada-United States NEXUS enrolment centre, at which time a photograph, fingerprints and an iris scan will be taken.

To participate in NEXUS, you have to complete the application form. Simply download the fillable PDF below and save it to your computer. You can then fill in your information and save your work as you go. Or you can print it out and fill it in by hand. Completed forms must be mailed along with the processing fee to the appropriate processing centre.

Mail the completed form, along with photocopies of your supporting documents and the application processing fee, to one of the following locations.

CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers will check the information you have provided on your application to make sure you meet the requirements of customs and immigration legislation. Criminal information databases will also be verified.

After the initial processing of your application is complete, you will receive a letter inviting you to set up an appointment for an interview at a NEXUS enrolment centre.

EligibilityEdit

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • comply with the admission requirements of both countries
  • undergo background security checks using Canadian and American law enforcement databanks
  • be citizens or permanent residents of Canada or citizens or resident aliens of the United States who have lived in either country for the last three consecutive years
  • have no criminal record (or have been granted a record suspension, formerly known as a pardon)
  • have no violations of customs or immigration legislation

Other criteria may apply.



FeesEdit

  • There is a fee of CAN $50 or US $50 for each applicant 18 years of age or older.
  • Canadian residents can pay by certified cheque, money order or credit card.



ValidityEdit

  • A NEXUS identification card is valid for five years.
  • NEXUS cardholders should reapply to renew their membership three months before it expires

InstructionsEdit

Your participation in NEXUS is strictly voluntary. If you complete and submit the application form, the information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility. Please refer to the Canadian Privacy Act and the U.S. Privacy Act, both of which can be found in the NEXUS Web Site.

Each applicant must complete a separate form.

Prior to making an application, either online or by paper, please verify the eligibility criteria for the NEXUS program.

The application process to determine eligibility takes approximately six to eight weeks.

Need for the DocumentEdit

NEXUS is designed to expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States.

The NEXUS program allows low-risk pre-approved travellers to use designated NEXUS border crossings without being subject to regular questioning by customs and immigration officers. The program issues NEXUS identification cards for entry into both Canada and the United States to Canadian and American participants.

Online Application

You can apply to NEXUS online using the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES), which is operated by U.S. CBP.

In the online application, some of the information requested is designated as optional. Your eligibility to participate in NEXUS is not affected by whether you provide the optional information.

Paper Application

You can complete the NEXUS paper application by downloading and filling out the form, printing it and mailing it together with the processing fee.

If you do not provide true, accurate and complete information in your NEXUS application, your membership may be denied. There are severe penalties for knowingly and willfully falsifying or concealing a material fact, or using any false document when you submit the application. Making a false representation may also result in the denial of any other application you may make for any benefit under U.S. immigration laws.



Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

If you are approved to participate in NEXUS, you will receive a membership identification card to use when entering Canada or the United States at all designated NEXUS air, land and marine ports of entry.

Membership will enable you to save time by:

  • using automated self-serve kiosks in dedicated areas at designated international airports;
  • using dedicated lanes at the land border; and
  • reporting to border officers by phone in advance of your arrival in the marine mode of transportation.
  • using the Trusted Traveller Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) Security Line at major and select medium-sized Canadian airports to expedite airport pre boarding security screening. For detailed information, please visit the CATSA Web site.
