Procedure

How to Apply
Apply In-Person

1. Applicants should then visit the visit the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, nearest Regional/District Offices or Botswana Missions abroad for the application process for the citizenship Naturalization of Foreign Spouse {see address details below}.
2. Collect and submit the completed Form S “Certificate for Resumption of Botswana Citizenship” along with the supporting documents {as listed to the under required document section below} to the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office to be verified by the attending officer.
3. Applicants will then be required to pay the processing fee at the immigration/embassy office, cash counter and obtain an acknowledgment slip.
4. All application file will then be forwarded to the Department of immigration and Citizenship office in Botswana for evaluation and processing.
5. After processing, the response will be sent to the applicant by letter through mail, requesting you to renounce your foreign citizenship in the presence of a magistrate, Commissioner for Oaths/Notary Public in Botswana or a Botswana ambassador/consul if abroad.
6. If your application is rejected a rejection letter will be sent to you via mail. You can re-apply if you wish. (There is no time restriction for re-submission).
7. Upon the making the renouncement, the certificate of Resumption of Botswana Citizenship will then be drawn by the Department of immigration and Citizenship and issued to the applicant at the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office, upon payment of the required certificate fee and against the applicant identification document and acknowledgment slip

Required Documents

• Two passport size-colored photos.
• Late renunciation form.
• Certified copy of birth certificate.
• Certified copy of parents’ marriage certificate if applicable.
• Proof of parents’ citizenship status.
• Certified copy of valid residence permit/ Omang.
• Justification letter explaining why the applicant is resuming.
• Applicant’s marriage certificate (if applicable).

Eligibility

• Botswana citizens by birth, descent and registration but have ceased to be citizens of Botswana due to failing to renounce their foreign citizenship before attaining the age of 21 or having willingly renounced their Botswana Citizenship.
  

Fees

• The processing fee is BWP200.00

Validity

• The Certificate is Valid Forever and it is issued once i.e. there is no replacement, if it get lost/stolen/damaged.
