Procedure

Apply In Person

1. The application to renew a Flight Engineer License shall be submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) head office, not later than fourteen (14) working days prior to the date of expiry of the current license. CAAB Contact Details
2. The application shall be made in writing using a prescribed form; Application for Airman License and/or Rating form, obtainable at the CAAB head office or download it via the CAAB website CAAB Application Forms or download it directly using this link Application for Airman License and/or Rating form
3. The completed form shall be accompanied by all the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page and submitted to the CAAB head office, Personal Licensing unit for consideration, only if the applicant is a holder of a valid medical certificate or after ascertaining that your medical assessment has been assessed as “fit” by the Civil Aviation Medical Board (CAMB). This will be certified in the Aviation Medical Assessment application form. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
4. Upon receipt of the application, the Personal Licensing officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
5. If the Personal Licensing officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
6. Applicants will be required to pay prescribed license renewal fees of BWP 220.00, as per the CAAB Fees Schedule, (refer to the “Fees” section of this page), which is payable either in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
7. The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
8. After successful processing of the submitted documents, when all regulatory requirements for approval of the license are satisfactorily met, the CAAB Personal Licensing officer shall prepare the renewed license that shall be valid for five (5) years from the date of issue, which indicate the approval scope and limitations.
9. Notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the applicant by phone or mail after fourteen (14) working days of submitting the application.
10. Proceed to the CAAB personal registration and license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the licensing office, applicant will be required to surrender their expired license before being issued with the renewed license.

• Proof of Six (6) months of maintenance work carried out in the previous 24 months
• Valid identity document (passport for non-citizens/Identity card for citizens)
• 2 Recent passport-size photographs.
• A valid Class I medical certificate.
• Proof of payment of the renewal license fee.
• Any other additional documents requested for be the CAAB Personal Licensing Office.

Eligibility

• The applicant should be in possession of a valid/expired Flight Engineer License.
• An applicant has passed all Knowledge Tests/Examinations Passed and skills tests (as per Civil Aviation Personnel Licensing requirements).
• The applicant should show that he has satisfactorily met the professional competence requirements required by the Civil Aviation Regulatory.

Fees

• The Flight Engineer License renewal fee is BWP 220.00.

Validity

• The validity of the Flight Engineer License shall be valid for five (5) years from the date of issue unless suspended, revoked, or cancelled by the authority.
• The application to renew the license shall be submitted to the CAAB office, PEL unit for consideration not later than fourteen (14) working days prior to the date of expiry of the current license.

Need for the Document

• A person shall not act as a flight engineer of an aircraft registered in Botswana unless that person holds a flight engineer license with appropriate ratings.
• Flight engineers assist aircraft pilots and engineering maintenance staff by operating aircraft instruments and systems.
• Whilst the license authorizes you to undertake the duties of a flight engineer, you must also be endorsed for the specific class of aircraft that you will be operating in.
