Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. The application for a wildlife specimen import permit shall be made to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) licensing office at the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) office, which is under the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, and Tourism.Ministry Contact Details
2. Those interested in the permit visit the CITES licensing office, for guidance regarding the import of CITES controlled species and collect,complete the Animal wildlife /import application form, Copies of the Application Form are available for free at the DWNP office or directly download it using this Animal wildlife/Import application form link
3. Submit the duly completed form in all respect, attached to the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page to the DWNP,CITES licensing office.
4. Upon submission, the application is checked for completeness and correctness by the CITES licensing officer, if everything is in order the application is processed.
5. After processing which in a day, the licensing officer, shall where it is satisfied that an application meets the requirements for the issuance of the permit, issue to the applicant permit subject to such conditions as it may deem fit.
6. A person whose application for a permit has been approved, shall while collecting the permit, produce their identification document and pay a permit fee specified against the permit he/she applies for, as the fees differ according to the animal products and species as per Wildlife Conservation and National Parks Act of 1992.

Please Note:

• The imported animal will be subjected to physical examination at the border or entry point of the country.
• Exotic species are not allowed to be imported to Botswana.

Eligibility

Botswana citizens and non-citizens wishing to import animals (wild animals) in Botswana.However, this service is mostly sed by Game Ranchers.

Fees

The prices differ according to the animal products and species as per the Wildlife Conservation and National Parks Act of 1992.

The validity of the import permit is mentioned on the permit.

• This Permit is issued primarily to Game Ranchers that wish to Import animals/wildlife into Botswana.
• The Permit is necessary for the animals to be allowed entry to Botswana. Exotic species are not allowed to be imported to Botswana.
