- To operate a private security services company in Botswana, citizens must first apply and register a company with the Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) with the word SECURITY included in the company name for them to apply for the Private Security Services Licence with the Ministry of Defence, Justice, and Security Headquarters’ office. - Applicants will be required to collect and complete the following forms; Application for a Security License Clearance Form, Statutory Declaration by Application as to Conviction (Form 3), and Security Clearance Form. Copies of these forms are available at the inquiries desk at any of the Ministry head offices or directly download it using this link: License Application Form A, statutory declaration by application as to conviction Form 3, Security license clearance form.
- Note; form 3 statutory declaration should be sworn in the presence of a Commissioner of oaths
- The applicant will be required to submit the certified copies of the supporting documents as mentioned under the” Required Documents” section of this page; in addition to the duly completed application forms, in all respect to the Ministry headquarter office. Any omission of these documents will render the registration process incomplete.
- If the application is submitted on your behalf by a consultant, the applicant should include a letter naming the consultant as their representative. The applicant should include their postal address, telephone, and fax numbers.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the ministry receptionist/secretary at the front desk will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the application file for vetting and consideration by the Private Security Services Licensing board.
- Applicants will be issued with an acknowledgment slip with a reference number by the secretary for future inquiries that may require clarification by the Private Security Services Licensing board during the processing period. If summoned by the board, applicants will be required to avail themselves of an interview.
- The client will be notified of the outcome of their application (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) via phone/SMS.
- Upon notification of the approval by the licensing board, the license issuing officer will draw up the license as directed by the licensing board and present it to a senior officer to be certified (signed/stamp) and made available to be issued to the client.
- The applicant will be required to produce a proof of identity document and the acknowledgment slip and pay the license “Fees” section of this page while collecting the license.
- If the application was not approved, the applicants will be issued with a notice of refusal “Form D”.

- Set of fingerprints (available at any police station).
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) of each Director.

EligibilityEdit
To be eligible applicants must meet the following criteria
- Only citizens of Botswana with no criminal record can apply for a license to operate a private security services company as a Director.
- Directors of a private company should register with CIPA.
- Should have a valid National Identity Card (Omang)
- Companies that fail to comply with BURS requirements such as submission of Tax Returns are not considered.
FeesEdit
- Upon successful processing of a Private Security Services License application, applicants must pay a fee of BWP 1000.00 when collecting the license.
- Annual renewal fees amount to BWP 500.00.
- NOTE: License holders who fail to renew their licenses before the expiry date will be liable to a fine not exceeding BWP 50,000.00.

Important Notes
- Categories of Private Security Services to be licensed are Security Guard Services, Specialist Security Services, Close Protection Services, Electronic Security Services, Private Investigator Services, and Security Advisory Services.
- A person who wishes to perform the duties of a security guard should make an application for a Security Guard Certificate with the Private Security Services Licensing Board.
