  1. The application to Export a Deceased Body from Botswana shall be made to the Department of Protocol and Consular Services office, which is under the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation office, which facilitates burials and repatriation of foreign nationals in Botswana.Ministry Contact Details
  2. Applicants should first contact the diplomatic mission, or consulate of the country of the deceased in Botswana and request a Note Verbale authorizing repatriation of the deceased from Botswana.
  3. Upon receiving the request, the embassy officials will request the following documents for the remains of the deceased to be transported.
    • Proof that the deceased person is a foreigner e.g., Passport, Birth Certificate, or Identity Card
    • Locally issued burial and/or transit permits.
    • Certified copy of the Death Certificate.
    • A letter from the local health authority certifying that the deceased did not die of contagious disease.
    • A letter from the Director of the funeral home stating how the body was embalmed.
    • Copy of Passport/ID of Shipper
    • Contact Details of Consignee and ID/Passport number
  4. They (the embassy) may also give the next of kin some forms to fill. This depends on the country where the deceased passed away. Each country has its own procedures for dealing with the repatriation of the bodies of the deceased.
  5. On receipt of the above documents, the application will be registered for processing and consideration which is within 7-14 days.
  6. After processing, the High Commission will issue a letter of no objection (Note Verbale) for the remains to be transported from Botswana and issue it to the applicant against his/her identity document.
  7. Submit the Note Verbale and accompanying documents (death certificate, a copy of passport or Identity card of the applicant, residence permit, letter from the spouse or authorized immediate family member consenting to the repatriation)to the Office of the Department of Protocol and Consular Services, housed at the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation office, for processing and consideration, which is within 2 working days.
  8. After processing, the repatriation permit/ export document is printed out and made available to be issued to the applicant upon producing their identity document and the Death Notification certificate.
  9. No fee is charged for the service.

ValidityEdit

The permit is valid for 3 months, so it is expected that within that period of 3 months deceased is exported to the country of origin.

Please Note.

  • A metal hermetically sealable casket is recommended for shipment of the body.
  • In addition, identify a funeral home to take and preserve the body once it arrives at the deceased home country.
  • Also, the family will pay the airline transportation costs for the body, washing and embalming the body, and buying the coffin.
  • The transportation cost also differs with different airlines having different transportation fees, and also the washing and embalming the body and buying the coffin will differ with the funeral home/mortuary handling the body.
