Andaman and Nicobar - Obtain a Legal Heir Certificate (Succession Certificate)

Following are the ways through which you can obtain a legal heir certificate in Andaman and Nicobar.
Apply In-Person:
- A Legal Heir can either directly contact the Lawyers to obtain a Legal Heirship Certificate or Panchayat can also issue the Legal Heir Certificate.
- The legal heir in India or the legitimate heir of the deceased person must approach the correct Government Authority with the death certificate of the deceased.
- Submit a written application form along with required documents to the authority.
- Authorities after checking the attached documents and details submitted, will make entries and provide you record number for reference. The same will be sent to your registered mobile number for future reference.
- The application will be verified by the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) and Revenue Inspector (RI).
- There will be a ground level verification and scrutiny of the documents and details provided.
- Once the verification is over, these officials will submit their report to the Tehsildar.
- Tehsildar will decide to issue the Legal heir Certificate to the applicant with the names of all legal heirs of the deceased.
- Applicant will get the certificate in 15 days after due verification.
Note : Except the kin of deceased government servants. Everyone else has to obtain a succession certificate through their jurisdictional civil court. Please contact a advocate to apply for this certificate. He will be experienced in applying for this certificate.

- There is no facility to apply online instead you can download the application form by visiting the nearest CSC/e- Corner and obtain legal heir certificate.
Required DocumentsEdit
Following documents are required to obtain a legal heir certificate
- Self-undertaking i.e. an Affidavit drafted and notarized.
- Letter from the Govt. Department of the deceased employee to obtain legal heir certificate from DC office.
- Identity Proof of Applicant E.g. Voter ID Card, Aadhaar Card or PAN Card, Driving License, Passport, etc.)
- Residence proof of all legal heirs E.g. Passport, Telephone Bill with the name of the Legal Heir, Election Commission Photo ID Card, Applicant’s current and valid ration card, Aadhaar Card.
- Date of Birth Proof of all Legal Heirs E.g. Birth Certificate issued by a Municipal Authority or any office authorized to issue Birth and Death Certificate by the Registrar of Births & Deaths, School leaving certificate / Secondary School leaving certificate/ Certificate of Recognized Boards from the school last attended by the applicant or any other recognized educational institution, Passport, Pan Card, etc.).
- Death Certificate of the deceased employee in the original.
- Death Certificate of the deceased direct legal heir in original (if required).
- Residence Certificate of the deceased E.g. Passport, Voter ID Card, Ration Card etc.
In case of Spouse applies for certificate
- If the spouse survives, Aadhaar, Marriage Registration Certificate or Passport or Voter ID should be submitted
- Birth certificate or Transfer Certificate of all Children
- Self declaration of the spouse indicating all other legal heirs (including Mother-in-law if wife is the applicant)
In case of Child applies if parent are deceased
- Death Certificate of the parents
- Birth certificate / Aadhaar / Passport / T.C of the applicant and aadhaar card of all possible heirs
In case of Child (minor) applies if parents are deceased
- Death Certificate of the parents
- Birth certificate / Aadhaar / Passport / T.C of the applicant and Aadhaar card of all possible heirs
- Guardianship order issued by the Hon’ble civil court to prove relationship to the heirs
In case of Parents or sibling apply (unmarried children deceased)
- Death Certificate of the Deceased
- Birth certificate / Aadhaar / Passport / T.C of the deceased
- Self declaration of the parents / siblings

- A legal heir certificate is issued by the government for those individuals whose parent/husband is dead without leaving a will.
- To establish relationship for claims relating to Insurance, pension, retirement benefits or service benefits of central and state government departments, Government undertakings etc.
- In legal succession cases to get succession certificate to establish the relationship
- To get employments for example compassionate appointments.
- Approach the District Thasildar office with the death certificate and produce the form.
- All required documents to be submit while lodging the application.
- It will take around a month to process all the necessary information and receive the certificate.
