ProcedureEdit

  • A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a non-profit, voluntary citizens’ group that is organized on a local, national or international level.
  • All NGO’s must be registered by NGO Coordination Board in accordance with the NGO coordination Act.

Apply In-PersonEdit

  1. The Board of directors of a NGO should carry out a meeting and take minutes on having a name change.
  2. Make an application for reservation of a name. This is made on Form 2 Name reservation application form.
    • You are expected to propose three (3) names in order of priority for the organization to be registered. .
  3. Processing fee of KES 1000 is charge for the name search and reservation. The name search and reservation takes a half a day. .
  4. Once a name has been approved, it is reserved for a period of sixty (60) days. An applicant can renew the reservation on the expiry of the name reservation period for a further sixty (60) days on payment of a further Kenya Shillings Five hundred (KES 1000). .
  5. This is followed by amending of the NGO’s constitution showing the NGO’s new Name. .
  6. You are then supposed to make an advertised on the local dailies informing the general public of the intended name change. .
  7. Once the new constitution is ready and you have made the advertisement you can proceed to make the application to make a name change by visiting the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board offices. Here you will be given a Notification of Change of Name Form 16 to fill and submit. You can also obtain this application form by visiting the NGO Bureau Website
  8. The filled application form should also be submitted with all the required documents. This include:
    (i). A formal application addressed to the Executive Director seeking for consent, signed by the three registered officials of the Organization.
    (ii). Minutes of the meeting proposing the change of name. .
    • The minutes should be submitted within 14 days from the date of meeting.
    • The minutes should indicate the reasons for having the name change.
    (iii). Amended copy of the constitution showing the new name and signed by all members.
  9. You should then proceed to pay the processing fees and summit the receipt to the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board offices. A Processing fee of Kes.27,200/= for International NGOs and Kes.12,500/= for local NGOs.

  10. On Completion of this process, it will take Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board 2 days to acknowledge the change the name and changes are effected within 90 days

  1. Before an application to change a name is made, the applicant should submit the name of the NGO for approval from the Director of the Non-Governmental Organizations Board. This is done by filling Form 2 and Submitting the filled form to the Registry for conducting the search.
  2. The registry will search and recommend the reservation.
  3. Submission of reserved name to the Programmes Manager for approval.
  4. Download Notification of Change of Name Form 16
  5. to apply for the NGO name change after the name has been approved
  6. The application for registration will be submitted to the Executive Director, NGOs Co-ordination
  7. Board, P.O Box 44617-00100, Nairobi Kenya, with the requited documents attached.
  8. Pay applicable fees and send proof of payment together with the application.

  • The Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Board is a State Corporation established by the Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Act (Cap 19) of 1990. The Board has the responsibility of regulating and enabling the NGO sector in Kenya.
  • The Board is currently under the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.
  • All NGO applications should be typed or filled in block letters.
  • All applications MUST contain ORIGINAL signatures of the officials and members as applicable.
  • All signatures must be originals, scanned copies will not be accepted
