Procedure

Apply in Person

1. To apply for the Extension of your stay in Jamaica, you should visit the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), extension to stay unit. You can view PICA’s location map and contact details via this link: Link
2. Obtain the application form for Extension of stay in Person at PICA’s head office or branches. you can download the application form online through PICA’s website: Link (Extension Of Stay (Immigration)) or directly via this link: Link
3. Fill the application form correctly and attach all the required documents mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below according to the category which you belong in.
4. Go to Extension to Stay office at PICA, payment section and pay the application fee at the cashier who will fill the cashier section of the application form and endorse it.
5. Now submit the complete application form alongside all the required documents to the PICA’s service window.
6. The official at the service window will verify your application and issue acknowledgement receipt containing the application details
7. The application will be forward to the responsible department for approval and processing which will take three business days to complete.
8. Visit the PICA’s office to collect the permit authorizing the extension of stay for the specified period indicated in it.

Required Documents

Visitor:

• Valid Passport for at least six (6) months
• Return Ticket
• Letter stating reason for applying for an extension
• Entry visa based on list of countries that require visa prior to arrival

Student:

• Valid passport for at least six (6) months
• Letter of Registration from an Educational Institution ( accredited by the Ministry of Education) addressed to the Chief Executive Officer
• Return ticket valid for one (1) year
• Entry visa (where applicable) based on list of countries that require visa prior to arrival

Employment:

• Valid passport for at least six(6) months
• Work permit/exemption/receipt/letter from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security
• Entry visa ( where applicable) based on list of countries that require visa prior to arrival

Marriage exemption:

• Valid passport for at least six(6) months
• Marriage exemption certificate from the Ministry of labor and Social Security
• Birth/Naturalization Certificate or Machine readable Jamaican passport of Jamaican Spouse
• Entry Visa (where applicable) based on list of countries that require visa prior to arrival
• Marriage Certificate

Dependency:

• Valid passport for at least six(6) months
• Principal applicants passport, work permit/exemption letter from Ministry of Labor or Citizenship Certificate
• Documents establishing relationship e.g. Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate/Adoption Certificate
• Entry Visa (where applicable) based on list of countries that require visa prior to arrival

Eligibility

• Visitors, Students, Employed individuals, individuals with marriage exemptions and Dependency individual who wish to extend their time on the island beyond the time initially given by an immigration officer at the port of entry.

Fees

• Extension of Stay (Processing Fee): JM$10,000.00

Validity

• The extension to stay is valid for the period stated in it

Instructions

• Visitor: A person on visit cannot remain in the island in excess of six (6) months
• Student: A foreign national enrolled in an Institution of learning, registered by the Ministry of Education. This person must go the PICA office upon arrival in the Island within two weeks of entering Jamaica to have their extension placed in their passport
• Employment: A foreign national engaged in gainful employment
• Marriage exemption: A foreign national married to a Jamaican national
• Dependency: A foreign national who does not work but is a dependent on a spouse or parent who works in the Island.

Need for the Document

• Extension to stay proves that you are allowed to be in Jamaica beyond the initial time you were allowed to stay when you first entered Jamaica. Failure of obtaining an extension to stay when your period of stay has expired will result in the individual being in breach of the island’s immigration requirements, which incurs penalties.
